I reserved a room for a night but when I got there in the early evening as planned, there was no sign of life - only leftover breakfast dishes still on the table, old coffee in the pot, heat on, general disarray, but nobody home, and no indicator of where I was to stay, or response from the caretaker until hours later when I got a message that she had lost her phone. The friendly owner was out of town for the season and did respond to my texts more quickly, but with little cell on that side of the island, I didn't get the message until it was too late, and had driven back to the other side of the island to find a place to stay before dark. There are some stores about a mile up the hill (Aquinnah shops) that are great for local souvenir shopping, a restaurant, lighthouse, etc - but if you want much else, you'll need to prepare ahead of time. There is a local bus that goes past the place, but we did not get a chance to check this out.
Elise is a great host! Very kind and will help you with whatever you need. Highly recommended, especially for those just trying to get away from the noise and work,...
