Wow! I’ve never been kicked out of a hotel before, just for associating with a friend who’s Native American and with my spouse calmly and respectfully bringing up our concern about a staff member’s racist treatment of our friend who had been trying to visit us there the night before. I’m really glad we had already checked out and packed up. I walked up to the counter to understand what happened and got a finger to my face and a “GET OUT, NOW.” Some people hear the word “racism” and fly into a rage and try to get rid of you, even if you’re a nice family visiting from out of the area. Avoid Hotel Arcata if you have brown skin or have brown people you love and care about.
Update Hotel Arcata’s 8/11 response to my review shows that they’ve refused to honestly address what occurred and have completely taken the side of their employees who displayed disgraceful behavior to my family and our friend. My spouse has posted a separate review detailing their experience in being yelled at and kicked out by your employee Sherri, as well as the account our friend shared with us from the night before when a suspicious employee shined a light in his face and refused to help him find our room. My family is respectful in our interactions and never has incidents like this occur, so Hotel Arcata’s account is a complete distortion of what happened, and this was a shocking experience for us. All my spouse did to be verbally attacked and banned from Hotel Arcata was to calmly bring up the incident and our concern of racial bias. Sherri refused to have a calm, rational discussion and instead went into a rage, sent my spouse and our child out of the hotel, and (in a very professional manner) flipped us off through the window. I was similarly yelled at and kicked out for simply walking in and approaching the counter. We were pretty shaken and upset and informed some folks coming up to the hotel that we’d experienced an issue with racism there (we were not yelling at other guests). Sherri’s reaction was simply horrid and unacceptable. The hotel could have heard our concern and investigated the incident, but some people flip out when someone brings up the potential for racism. A different employee who had actually been understanding and compassionate told me that the employee in the original incident was “on edge” from being attacked in the past, which tells this employee has the potential for reactivity and bias when identifying who he perceives as a threat. It’s a conversation Hotel Arcata needs to have with themselves. Racism, even if subconscious, is too prevalent in this country and,...
Read moreMy car was towed as a result of staying at this hotel (Hotel Arcata). I arrived late around 11:30pom to the hotel after driving 12 hours to the destination. First, there is no parking owned by the hotel. The hotel is part of a row of shop houses. We parked on the marked parking space in front of the hotel. We noticed there was one cone in the very front parking slot that specifically stated "No parking". So, we parked a few slots down that didn't have a cone. When we checked in, the receptionist Laura told us to take a photo of where we park just to be sure it didn't have a cone. We did. She told us next day is Oyster Fest and it was a big event for the city. She didn't mention more.|Next day we got up and had breakfast at 10am. We checked out from the front desk and walked out of the hotel, only to find that there were RV trucks, food trucks all parked on the front of the hotel and our car disappeared!|Almost immediately a woman who worked on the Oyster fest told us our car was towed. She said she had checked with the hotel and the manager told them none of those cars were their guests' cars. |Later on, we found out from the hotel manager (Zach) that we should have been briefed that parking on whole stretch of street in front of the hotel are not allowed. He indicated the receptionist would have told us. He kept insisting that we had been told even though he wasn't on duty last night. This is just bad business behavior - lying to the customer. He said not only it was the Oyster Fest that we are not allowed to park in front of the hotel, every weekend we are not allowed to park in front of the hotel. What is worse, he said every guest would have gotten a green slip of parking from the receptionist to put on our dashboard so the car will not be towed away after 2 hours of parking a few blocks from the hotel. |Worse is, all this parking instruction is not even mentioned in their website. We were told by the towing company we needed to pay $325.00 in order to get our car. In the end, we managed to get the Oyster Fest organizer to pay for the tow after two hours of hassle. The hotel has made zero effort to help us retrieve our car. I have never had parking issue in my entire life traveling in the USA. This experience tells me to never trust a website enticing you on a historical charm but always stay with the credible hotel brands...
Read moreI wanted to give this place a better review because I liked the location and I loved the vintage charm it had. The rooms are older which is understandable but for $300+ a night, I really expected there to be some controlled air. It gets very stuffy in the rooms and the ceiling fans weren’t really doing much. You could open the windows on the 3rd floor which I was surprised but it gets extremely loud so if you’re trying to get some rest, you probably won’t if you’re a light sleeper. But the main reason I’m leaving a review wasn’t going to be for these reasons, it was the way a situation was handled. I checked out 10 minutes before the required time to leave(11am) and went across the road to breakfast. About half way I had a feeling I left something, my fault completely but accidents happen. I checked all over my car and realized my very expensive shampoo wasn’t there, like my gut was telling me. I rushed inside and asked if I could go up to the room and check. I unfortunately noticed the room was open but didn’t see anyone in initially. I checked the shower and sure enough, the room had been cleaned and the shampoo was missing. I asked some other women cleaning if they’d seen it, one of them I seen before I left, told me no. The women mentioned that they didn’t clean the room, a male did and they brought me to him to speak about it. He mentioned how he didn’t see it and was sorry. To be honest, I’ve worked as a cleaning lady in a hotel years ago and know that this happens a lot. I completely felt like their response, in particular the women, was not genuine. It’s a well known high end brand, nearly full and as much as I don’t want to accuse people..It’s VERY hard not too. I spoke with the man that was working the front desk and he seemed to think that is just something that wouldn’t happen, but in my opinion you never really know, if you weren’t there. I’m leaving a review in hopes of a response from management to possible look at cameras for this issue. It was such a small time frame and to know that something could have been taken so fast, is very upsetting. I’m leaving this hoping this never happens to anyone else there, I’m just trying to keep...
