Absolutely unlike anywhere else you have or will ever stay. We came here for a short honeymoon, and since my husband loves to fish, I figured he would enjoy a place right on the river. Located in the old Hanthorn Cannery, which shuttered in 2001, these rooms sit atop a unique slice of Astoria history. The museum one floor below is a treasure, full of artifacts pulled from other floors of the building to tell a story about the history of the cannery, adjoined with a donations and thrift-based gift shop full of odd treasures. My favorite part was the Cannery Workers' Memorial hallway, where former cannery workers signed their names on the walls.
We stayed in the First Mate's Suite and we could have spent all day in the room, watching enormous cargo ships go by on the Columbia River. The view alone is worth the cost. I was happy I brought my binoculars, as we spotted a few seals and so, so many sea birds. In the mornings, we enjoyed pastries and coffee from Coffee Girl, which is conveniently located downstairs.
There's nothing crazy fancy about the room, except that it's enormous. It's your standard issue hotel room, but I was fine with that--the price was reasonable, especially for Astoria, and the location is so unique that it's hard to argue. Plus, the beds and pillows were comfy, and the sea lions were busy mating in California, so we slept soundly. There's no turn-down service, so if you're the sort of person that needs a housekeeper to pick up your towels every day, this isn't the place for you. But we didn't need or want that, and it was a fantastic place to come crash at after a day spent exploring the area.
The upkeep on an old dock like this has to be insane, but it's a treasure, and I hope the owners are able to protect it. A+, we loved it, would...
Read moreI went to Astoria for my first time and wanted to stay somewhere special. But more importantly I wanted privacy and that meant to not be in a hotel or motel where I would be sharing walls with other people. So I picked this place from their AirBnB ad which states that you will have the entire top floor of an old cannery to yourself. This was not the case. In fact, there were at least three other rooms and the room I had reserved, which was advertised as being large enough for four people, was just like any mid-range hotel room and did not have the charm or the privacy I was expecting. Also, there was a coffee pot in the room but when I wanted to make coffee, there were two bags of decaf. So, I felt like that was their way of forcing me to go buy coffee downstairs which was insanely overpriced. I would save my money next time and stay at the hotel that is just...
Read moreOverall: Right on/over the water on an old cannery pier. Lots of sea lions barking at all hours! Rogue Public House is downstairs.||||Check in was loosy goosy. No one showed up to check us in when we arrived at 4PM as required. We had to track Floyd down in his scuba shop on the pier. This should be improved; who wants to hunt down staff when you're paying this much?||||Location: We had the 1st Mate room. Apparently there isn’t an elevator, so you’ll need to carry your bags up stairs. Nice room, awesome views. Could use blackout curtains for late sleepers, but the sea lions will wake you up anyway.||||When you check in, be sure to ask for the wi-fi password (secured and very fast).||||Bathroom: Pretty small. ||||Bed/Linens: Comfy bed. Feather pillows were very prickly and stiff—down pillows would be better.||||Stay again? Yes, with...
