I am surprised by the few negative reviews shown here? It's an older resort/cottage business, I stayed here in the late 70's, it's cute, and homey feeling. If you are expecting a 4 star hotel then you will be disappointed, there is nothing upscale or stuffy or pretentious about this place. It's clean, charming, laid back comfort and relaxation with a fantastic beach along Lake Huron, a volleyball net, cute little tiki bar (not a real bar - just for atmosphere and a hanging spot), kids movies outdoors (weather permitting), a one man band on the beach on Wednesday night. If you can't find something to enjoy here then you're kind of a bummer I'm guessing? Our family chooses a place in Michigan every year to vacation for one week together for rest, relaxation, and fun. After staying at the Mai Tiki this year everyone in our party asked that we not go anywhere else next year, we have already re-booked for 2014. It's the one place that makes everyone happy; you can swim, play in the waves, hang at the campfire, go tubing, canoeing, kayaking nearby and party at the Tiki Bar at night (no, it's not an actual working bar - you have to bring your own), it's actually a lot of fun when you are with fun people. Who wants to spend a fortune on drinks when you can bring your own? Not to mention, seriously how could they afford to pay someone to "man" the bar all night - cut it out peeps... Maybe it was the company that the negative reviewers were keeping that made this place no fun for them, or maybe they just need to be entertained? For those of us who travel with our own fun and hang with laid back, fantastic people this place is the perfect spot to totally enjoy each others company and the awesomeness that is a GREAT LAKE - Hello.... It's beachfront, btw there will be wind, sand and chilly air sometimes - it's Michigan and YOU'RE ON A BEACH! PS: They specifically say they do not accept pets of any kind so not sure why the person with the dogs was surprised that the accommodations were not dog friendly? Why do some people always require special treatment? Hey, I love dogs (pets of all kinds) but I don't want to be playing on the beach and have any surprises if ya know what I mean? There are plenty pet friendly places nearby. We will keep coming back to Mai Tiki gladly every year, if you are fun, enjoy everything about the outdoors in Michigan come join us. If you are high maintenance, fussy, not particularly fun as a rule - please stick with the 4...
Read moreDo Not Go Here. The staff is rude and will not even attempt to work with you if something goes wrong.
Last year I reserved their Tiki Too Location. My trip was suppose to be next month. About 3 weeks ago almost all of the people who were going with me canceled last minute. After trying to replace them for a week I called Mai Tiki. While speaking to one of the workers, all I hear (very rudely in the background) was "Seriously? That puts us in such a hole." I explained to the woman I was actually talking too that I could keep ONE cabin because I still had SIX people interested. She said she would call me back. I waited all day. According to their hours online their office was going to close soon, so I called back. I get a different girl, who as I'm talking to I'm trying to explain the situation. She informs me that almost all of the cabins at their secondary locations have been filled. And asked of I want to rent ONE of them. I continue to inform her of my situation and she tells me she'll have someone call me back and hangs up. The person who called me back is her manager. Who immediately start talking to me like an idiot and is very rude with me. Telling me that I canceled my cabins so she doesn't understand what the problem is and cutting me off when I am trying to speak to her. I informed her that I already told the other woman I could keep 1 cabin. (This is information she already knows, she told me she listened to the recording of my conversation.) She tried to tell me that they have to do the whole thing as one unit so there's no way that I could possibly get a cabin. In the lot that I have already paid a $1,500 for... which is non-refundable. In a lot that the girl I was just talking to you is trying to sell me one of the said cabins. All they wanted to do was cheat me out of my money and make more money from other people. This third woman who I have spoken to also tells me that I'll get called back.
Like I said, this was about 3 weeks ago and I still haven't gotten called back. So in a Nut shell: Horrible customer service. Rude people. Lied to me multiple times trying to cover themselves. Cheated me out of my money. The worst part is that his would have been my second trip to my Tiki and it would not have been my last. They treated a return customer like this. Now I, nor anyone else that I know, will ever be...
Read moreMai Tiki is a tiki-themed resort right on the shore of Lake Huron consisting of a condo building with several units, and a dozen or so brightly painted cottages that accommodate four to eight guests each. I stayed in one of the small cottages, which sleeps four. There's no more room than you need - there's a small front room with a sofa sleeper, a small kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, microwave oven and a tiny four-burner gas stove. There's a postage-stamp-sized table (about 2 feet by 2 feet) attached to the wall with a couple stools. The bedroom has a double bed and the bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet. (If you've ever stayed in a Microtel, you're familiar with the concept.) Where this property really shines is its proximity to Lake Huron. The sunrise is worth waking up for, and by midday the sun has gone behind the cottages so you can relax in the Adirondack chairs on your deck and read or relax in the shade. Each cottage comes with a picnic table with thatched umbrella and a Weber kettle grill. The cottages aren't air conditioned and have a small space heater, but windows on all sides allow lake breezes to flow through. There is fast secure wifi available throughout the property.||||In season, there are activities for guests including a tiki bar, a bonfire in the evening, yard games and a deck right at the lakeshore. At night the cottages are illuminated with eave-line rope lights in different colors. ||||There are a few caveats. Units have dishes and cookware but the guest is asked to wash the dishes and empty the trash before departing. A coffee maker is provided (Mr. Coffee) but bring your own coffee and filters. Citing Covid precautions, the resort doesn't provide bathroom towels or bed blankets (sheets are provided) so bring your own. The backsides of the units (where the bedroom is) face US-23, which can be busy at times and you'll hear traffic noises. Checkout is promptly at 10 am, and guests are charged if they stay late. And the property charges a 3.5 percent surcharge for credit card usage. ||||The smallest cottages are fine for one or two people. Consider selecting a larger cottage if you have kids or a larger party.||||The owners and staff are nice people with a sense of fun and a concern for guest satisfaction. Although this was my first stay, there is a base of guests who return...
