We drove from PA to visit Kentucky and visit Bardstown. Wanted to see the "Old Kentucky Home", civil ear museum, and the bourbon center. We made our reservation weeks in advance. As we drove to our site - 28, we were amazed how close the sites were, extremely hilly, and cars & trucks parked in and close to the edge of the "road". Our site was a small patch of blacktop just barely enough for our van to fit on. There were dropoffs on all 3 sides on the patch. If I missed barely backing in, I would drop off the patch. While trying to back into the site, a truck was parked along the road right in front of our site. I had to come within inches of the truck to enter the small patch of the site. Once on the patch I noticed the patch was not level (tilted back and to the right). Then I went to hookup the water and electric. No outlet next to the site! Looked across a ravine back about 30 feet was the water and electric outlets. No way could I connect to them.
Why does the campground say this is a RV site with electric on the online system. Why is there no warning about this site's outlets? We went back to the attendant and asked for a real site. He said the 2 left have longer distances to the outlets!
So now, 2pm on a Saturday, we tried to find another campground. Had to drive another 50 miles to get a camping site and missed the attractions we planned to visit. We camped in every state in the US and this was the worst state campground site we have ever had.
How do I get my...
Read moreThis place was far from awful but it also definitely didn't leave us feeling like we wanted to come back. On the positive side it was an excellent location for visiting distilleries. Willett, Barton 1792, Makers, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam and Four Roses are all close by. It was heavily treed which made for nice shade on hot days. It was relatively quiet especially at night. There were lots of birds singing in the morning. Despite the small loop for walking the dog there was a second day use loop across the street which we would use for off leash walks during the times that it was closed off to traffic. There was also a large open tent area for walking around in, better walking than I expected given the small CG size.
On the negative side most sites were off level and required a bit of work to get in to. The utilities were strangely placed and required extension cords and extra hoses to reach. The showers were hot and were cleaned daily but were old, run down and not the most pleasant place to be.
Verizon service was 4G and was fast enough for all but video calls but was also a bit flakey and tended to come to a crawl at times. AT&T was better, suitable for video.
If I were doing it all over again I would still like the convenience of the location but would consider one of the local RV...
Read moreVery nice location. The area borders a golf course that is nicely manicured and very pretty to look out on if your camping spot is facing it. A little tricky to find My Old Kentucky Home because the sign is smaller than expected so you just drive on by! The camping spots are very small some with no or very little grass so good luck because your having to put the tent on asphalt which doesn't look like its even been cleaned off from debris. Our electrical box was a problem so we didn't have electricity. The restrooms need alot of attention. Definitely a total remolding or even start from the ground up because everything about the bathrooms needs to be done new. We've never camped in Kentucky but not sure if we would again basing on how my Old Kentucky Home is being taken care of. Sitting on a gold mine with the golf course right there. The camp host is very nice and helpful and tried to fullfil what we all needed in a timely matter. He was also dealing with a broken ice machine and had to go elsewhere over at the club house down below to get ice for all who needed it. The people all who were camping along side of us were so friendly , loved to talk and be helpful and even giving us weather updates because we were sleeping in hammocks the two nights we stayed there. ...
