My wife and myself found ourselves at the Baxter Inn Motel not as motel guests staying the night in one of the rooms but as guests of two long time residents that call the motel home. Both of the residents have physical disabilities that limit their ability to live independently without assistance with some basic everyday activities. Upon our first arrival at the motel we were assisted by the motel front desk clerk who was very helpful and cordial with locating the room we were in search of. The motel in general is dated and clearly not a 5 star establishment by any means but it appeared clean and tidy. After making contact with the two residents we were there to assist that evening, we returned home with plans to return the following day to finish business with the man and woman. My wife being a Licensed Practical Nurse was seeing the woman to assess and provide care following a recent car accident that left her needing assistance with nursing care at home as well as assistance with errands, transportation and some basic house keeping. I, myself, have been a motorcycle technician and have 20+ years of experience in fixing and bringing life back to vehicles needing repairs and restoring them to working, safe transportation for people at a cost that won't break the bank. I was approached by the gentleman about fixing a vehicle for him and after our initial visit, I was to return the following day to puck the man up and take him with me to start prior discussed repairs to his SUV. Upon returning to the Baxter Inn Motel the following morning, my wife and I pulled into the parking lot and parked our truck with the equipment and tools to complete the suv repairs in the bed, at the rear entrance to the motel. As we pulled around to the rear of the building we witnessed a man wearing only a pair of neon yellow running shorts and tennis shoes dragging something around the grassy yard directly behind the motel parking area. The man seemed very out of place for the time of day (6am). We got out of of truck and made entry into the building however I hesitated at the entrance, remaining just inside the entrance door, not able to shake the gut feeling that the out of place man acted very suspicious and had started making his way slowly in the direction of the entrance we were entering the building. I observed the man walk right up to my truck and reach I to the bed of the truck. Not realizing I was still standing just inside the door watching him. I immediately made my presence known by opening the door and confronting him about his actions of reaching into my truck bed where my work tools and equipment was knowing that he was not the owner of the vehicle or anything inside of the vehicle. I was very clear that it would be in his best interest to stay out of my vehicle because if I were to catch him stealing from or going through my personal property the law would be called. I also Informed him I would be speaking to the manager on duty to make him aware of his actions to prevent further encounters with him and him unlawfully being in contact with property not rightfully belonging to or concerning him. The man immediately got very verbally defensive and physically assertive. With a raised voiced and aggressive tone, he very matter of factly informed me that he was the security guard for the motel and was doing his job by investigating our vehicle to ensure that the doors are locked to prevent thefts. by attempting to open the vehicles doors. The man followed Into the motel and down the hallway to the front desk where I made contact with the manager. Update, was just approached by this individual at the local casey's fuel station and he insisted on making personal contact with me, as he parked next too my vehicle at the fuel pump, I told him I felt that his presence is a threat and I gave him fare warning that I wanted no contact with him and if he didn't leve me alone I have ever right to protect myself at all costs, I am at the police station in Baxter springs now filing a police report that a adult...
Read moreI booked this place because I'm traveling Historic 66, and it was mentioned on one of the sites. It may once have been a cool place, but now it's just a boring, soulless, corporate hotel. The room was clean, of a good size, and everything worked fine, but it could have been a Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Super 8...any of them. No personality to it whatsoever. I was looking for personality, so that was a disappointment.
If all I'd wanted was a good night's sleep for a reasonable price, I would give it higher marks. I wanted history, though, so it was a disappointment.
Another thing; Kansas has an unreasonably high sales tax - 9%. If you can arrange your day to stay in some other state, it's probably worth doing so. If, however, you're near the end of the day and want to explore the town, which is very nice, then it's a decent place to stay.
Baxter Springs itself is well worth a visit. The 66 Visitor Center is an old restored gas station, and though it wasn't officially open, Dean "Crazy Legs" Walker (look him up) let me in, and it's well worth a visit, especially if he's on duty. The town also has a very nice museum that highlights the mining in the area, much of the local history, and has a great display of arrowheads, as well as a wall of bricks collected from all over the US. Also, along the main street, you'll see plaques on the buildings telling their history. There's a 50's style soda fountain that is now used as a learning center, so it's not open to the public, but you can look in it. It's beautiful. Lots of town pride in their history, and the people are some of the nicest I've ever met. I look forward to making this trip again some day and...
Read moreTo be honest I saw the recessions and thought mhm it's either a hop or flop. In our case definitely a flop. The people on the front desk were nice but the rooms were horrible. First of all the room smelled like nobody was in the room for 5 years. The sheets had stains on and I was scared to hole night that I have bed bucks in my bed, which was good luck not the case. The towels were also dirty and I refused to use them and throw them in the garbage cause they had big black spots on. At least they wiped off the counters, but everything else was really dirty.
My last hope was the breakfast- at least some coffee, but I had to high hopes. There was almost no food, just some pastry in plastic, so I have no idea how old that was. And the coffee wasn't coffee it was water with a touch of coffee. So we had to go to Starbucks to get...
