Lovely hotel. Aesthetically delightful with lovely common areas, and great attention given to their remodel. Some water damage/possible mold visible on the ceilings in some areas, but I travel a ton and notice every little detail. Service was odd. Staff came to our room multiple times hours after we had checked in. The first time they asked if we had already checked in, which we had done via the app, received our digital key, and even stopped by the front desk upon arrival and picked up some physical keys as well. Ten minutes later they came back again and brought us more physical keys. It was weird. We then stopped by the desk on our way out and she acted like everything was fine and she didn’t know why they did that it was a bit frustrating as I was showering/getting dressed when they came. Anyhow, we left and I get about 10 minutes down the road and receive a notification from Hilton that my digital room key is ready. I open the app and it now shows me having access to two different rooms. One our original room, and one on a different floor. I immediately call the hotel and inform the same woman at the front desk. She acted like I was making it up or something lol it was very weird. I said I took a screenshot of the notification and 2 different rooms it says I have access to and could show her when I return. She said that wasn’t necessary and then proceeded to tell me the name of the man in the other room I have access to. That was odd too, but whatever. She said she would reset my digital key again. It was fixed after that, but I was not informed, until after trying unsuccessfully, that the digital key would not allow you entrance to the pool area. It worked at all other doors, but not the pool. Also, we were told in advance they offered complimentary shuttle service to local events. We specifically stayed there for a concert at Pine Knob for a quality hotel in a good location that offered shuttle service to Pine Knob. When I called to book the shuttle service I was told that the bellman was the shuttle driver and that they had given him the day off. She said she would talk to the manager and see if she could find anyone else to drive the shuttle and call right back. We waited an hour and never received a return phone call so we had to make other arrangements before it was too late as we weren’t familiar with the area and there were bad rain storms coming in. The diner was decent. Cool atmosphere, clean, but the service was a struggle and the prices are quite high for breakfast. Still no ce to have that option on site. Server was very friendly, but he forgot the milk and sugar for my $5 can of cold brew, forgot to bring appetizer plates, and didn’t refill our drinks until we flagged him down. It wasn’t super busy at the time, and he was very friendly, but clearly needed to write things down which he never did. 2 breakfast sandwiches, the hash plate, a coffee and an ice tea was $73 with...
Read moreI'm being generous with the 2 stars. Upon arrival, my wife checked in not feeling very welcomed. Later on, all of our interaction with staff specifically at the front desk was simply rude. Instead of being treated like guests, it seems we were more of an inconvenience. Our room had a view 20 feet across from a common area. There was a balcony, we didn't use, but I might have in the evening hours if the light outside worked; the light switch simply did nothing. Other things that didn't work included another light oddly positioned between the TV and the closet. There was no switch in site, although the entry light worked. The bathroom lights were fine, but the exhaust fan had no switch; only a blank plate that I assume would have operated it. The hotels restaurant opens before 7 or 8AM, but closes at 3PM. That's got to be a huge turn off for guests checking in, it was for us. I left my razor at home, having done this before, I've always been able to get one without issue from housekeeping or the front desk. They didn't have any. None, in the entire building. We needed a couple extra wash towels the morning of check out, but the front desk informed us that housekeeping was on lunch, and they'd bring some when they returned. Three hours later, even walking past housekeeping several times, they never came, and upon check out never asked if we got them. Speaking of housekeeping, I sure hope they are so focused on cleaning other areas of the room, that it was easy to forget the coffeemaker, which when I checked, had a used coffee filter inside. Upon check out we weren't even asked how our stay was over the three nights. For what its worth, its not a great hotel for younger kids, either. I get that many people prefer that; but in case you plan on bringing your younger children, be prepared that there's not many channels on the TV for kids, and though they said they have a pool we didn't make it there... come to think of it, I didn't even see the ice machine, or signs for one. I won't stay here again, I rather sleep in my car. I've had better experiences with low rate hotels in cruddy towns than this, and better experiences in high end hotels with multiple large conventions during my...
Read moreWe really enjoyed this hotel for the beautiful remodel, cleanliness, location, and especially the high quality customer service. We visited The Duke and it is a gorgeous little space - drinks were delicious with professional and friendly staff. The eggs and bacon at the breakfast buffet at Zalman's were dry, but the staff and the rest of the food were all wonderful. Room service was prompt and polite, and there was a great eye for detail. We loved that the pool is salt water instead of chlorine. The decor is simple and elegant, mostly neutral but with pops of jewel tones, and (other than the huge photos of models in the lobby) the art throughout the hotel is gorgeous.
The few downsides: -There were tack strips around the edge of the carpet in our room - to be expected - but the carpet is a low enough pile that our daughter yelped from having her foot land on the sharp point of a tack as she walked across the threshold from the main room to the bathroom. When we investigated we could feel every tack sticking up along that strip, invisible, but right under the surface of the carpet, so anyone stepping there without shoes on would be hurt. -The pool area would have been lovely, but it appeared we visited right after a children's birthday party - there was something we guessed to be broken Hatchimals shell all over the floor, including on the bottom of the hot tub and pool. There was also a child's pair of underwear next to the wall. Funny, but not ideal. -The a/c unit in our room didn't work properly until we removed the filter/cover. It appeared to be too clogged to allow the necessary airflow. -Our room had a mini fridge, but no microwave. That was disappointing since we could store food but not heat it up. I noticed after our stay that microwaves only come with higher end rooms (my fault for not noticing the difference upon booking, but we were surprised that no microwave was even an option at such a nice hotel).
I'm sure the condition of the pool was a fluke, and if we return we will try asking for a microwave and know to watch out for the tack strips. Despite the issues we really enjoyed our stay and will...
