We wanted to visit the Refugio Nacional in Cabo Rojo so we choose Luichy's Guest House for our visit. We arrived around 6 PM and had a little difficulty finding someone to check us in. After a call to the website number, we quickly had some help. Some of the next comments should be viewed in terms of the fact that this was a budget hotel, less than $100/night. I don't usually stay in hotels that have this rate, so I can't tell how they compare. There is no constant office hours, so one should know this and get everything they need at check in. There is a place to drop the key to checkout for this same reason.||||Our room was on the second floor on a side of the building that faces the beach. Between the room and the beach was an alley, and this was where people placed their garbage. For some reason the garbage had not been picked up, and the smell was awful. Our bags were carried up to the room, and I mention this as someone might not easily climb so many stairs, and there is no elevator. We were able to park the car within the gate which was nice as parking around us was not very good. There was a small parking fee (I think about $5). There were also some drainage problem in the parking area so there was stepping around drainage water which was a little tricky as it came across the parking space we had. ||||The room was attractively arranged and very clean. There was a little fridge. What we didn't expect was there was no soap or shampoo. There were no cups or ice. So, we took a short trip to a nearby grocery to gather these items. ||||There had been a storm earlier that day, and the wifi was out. The TV only had a few channels plus the HBO channels, so once it was dark, there was not much to do. Fortunately, I was able to use the hotspot from my phone. ||||There is a restaurant on the first floor, and one could pay $30 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, the next morning, we went down for breakfast, but it was closed as were the other places around it. I'm not really sure what time things opened up so we had breakfast back at the grocery store as it had a bakery. ||||The beach was nice and clear, very lovely, and much better than in San Juan where there is a lot of sediment in the ocean water that comes up on the beach. It was very near the...
Read moreThis charming small hotel was the victim of an arson on January 1, 2025. The adjacent restaurant, bar, and gift shop were destroyed, as were the rooms in the main part of the hotel. The alleged arsonist, an American woman, is now in custody in Missouri.|We had planned to arrive there on January 13, but heard about the fire a few days before, in the newspaper|(and not from the third-party with whom we had booked). |I called the hotel directly and spoke to the owner Angel. He said he hoped we would still come and that a few of his upgraded suites had not been affected at all by the fire and he would be happy to offer us one at the same price. We wanted to go to Cabo Rojo, so we went. |We canceled the third-party booking, and rebooked directly with Angel. Having seen pictures of the charming complex in this small seaside town, it was very sad to see the destruction from the fire, though inspiring to see how quickly the cleanup and rebuilding were coming along. |Our room, the Seaside Suite, was around the corner and faced directly onto the beach. I should add that we are an older couple, we like beaches, nature, hiking, and generally being outside. Although I always want a comfortable, clean room, preferably with a view, we are generally not luxury travelers, but this suite was quite luxurious. It was very clean, beautifully appointed, with a little kitchen and dining area and a large couch with a sea view. The bed was very comfortable and the bedding was lovely.|We did have a few problems with the plumbing, but Angel was always there within a few minutes to take care of things. The two crews working on rebuilding the hotel nearby included plumbers who quickly fixed our problem.|The area is great. El Combate beach is right outside, 2 1/2 beautiful miles of it, lined with tamarand trees. There are bike trails and walking paths and it is not far from other beaches and the remains of the old salt works.|Angel is planning and hoping to reopen his hotel early in February. I’m sure it will be lovely and I hope we get to go back again...
Read moreGot there on a Thursday late in the day....went next door to a restaurant for drinks and some munchies.....food was excellent. Next day went to beach, It was real nice and hardly anyone there....Luichy's provided beach chairs...we brought our own beach towels....(please do). Owner (Angel) was very welcoming. Our rooms (two BR's) were updated, very clean and had most of what you needed. We went a couple of miles away for groceries. Friday night at same bar next door was Kareoke, which seems to be the thing in PR, and it was excellent and alot of fun. The little town was awake until after midnight. Day three we walked to another very close beach and it was clean, water was clear and warm...so that was excellent. We came for the beach! Saturday night, more Kareoke down the street and it was a total blast...I think we were the only non locals. Everyone was so welcoming and delightful and food was excellent. Sunday everyone in town left....everything closed...the last bar did stay open but we spent the day at Luichy's pool. It is an above the ground pool, but it was serviced by a pool service while we were there and it is perfect and private....We did not see the owner before we left, so we could tell him thank you, but if we had, we would have. There were 3 of us and our room could have slept 6.....For a budget vacation,...
