I stayed at the Old Kinderhook Resort, Golf Club and Spa last weekend and it was amazing. I went with a friend for their birthday. We drove there from St. Louis Mo and it took about 2 hours 45 mins. It was beautiful scenery going and coming. The Resort itself was beautiful! I loved the look and feel of the property. There was an old town charm that I loved about it. We had a room at the main building with a king sized bed, fridge, patio with sliding doors accessing a part just off the golf course. We walked around a little bit outside and went to the Cabana to get a quick snack. The ice skating rink was in that area as well and the families were having a blast. The music was playing and the weather was nice. There were several fire pits surrounding the Cabana area as well with seating for many. Going back into our room we walked a little inside the main building to see the exercise room, pool and the beautiful fireplace. I sat in front of the fireplace for a good 20 minutes before going back up to the room. There was a piano located in the same room as well as a small bar/breakfast area. Our room was clean, smelled fresh and even came with 2 chocolate mints at the foot of the bed. That was a nice treat. This room was paid for through Expedia and we experienced no issues upon check in. There was however a refundable resort fee of $12 upon check in which wasn't an issue. The parking was plentiful out front with access doors on the sides of the building where you can enter with your room key card only. This property sat in the middle of a very heavenly scenery. There was green grass, beautiful trees and Bridges with streams around the property. This was very nice and serene to walk. Just make sure there were no golfers out as you don't wanna get hit with a flying ball. They did have a popular restaurant on grounds and we made reservations, but cancelled them before dinner. We headed to the Outback Steakhouse for dinner instead which was about 18 minutes away and definitely a cheaper option. I will say that staying at the resort food is not served all day. The restaurant is open for dinner only and the Cabana had snacks. We did get a burger and hotdog, but that's about all you have. The bigger town with Walmart and many eateries was about a 15 minute drive. That's a better option if you're traveling with a family and little ones. Also driving into the resort there are many homes for rent if you want something more private, with several bedrooms and it's own full kitchen. These are still on the property, but you can reserve these just like the resort hotel rooms. They're more expensive, but great for a group or family. Old Kinderhook Resort Golf Club and Spa was a very nice place that I look forward to going back to. If you go, definitely...

Read moreWhen making a reservation, I had to make a last minute change with my arrival time. I was told that this would be no problem, however after driving 7 hours to stay at the Old Kinderhook Resort .. upon arrival I was told that my room was "not ready" as it was still being cleaned by housekeeping. I arrived around 12PM, after being told that I would be able to check in at 11AM and the front desk staff member (who was extremely ignorant throughout this entire debacle) suggested I go swim while I waited for my room to be made ready (changing in the hotel bathroom) and that I would be called when I could check-in. As 4 o'clock was the promised check-in time, at the very latest by this front desk staff member.
MULTIPLE HOURS PASSED, and there was still no phone call made at any point. I would check periodically to see if there had been any update with my room and was told that it was still being worked on. The staff member informed me that housekeeping had cleaned the 1st, 2nd, and 4th floor from the time I had checked in.. but not the 3rd which seemed a bit odd as that was the floor I was staying on.
Eventually 4 o'clock rolled around, AND THE ROOM WAS STILL "NOT READY". The front desk staff member checked-in visitors who arrived after me, apologizing for the wait of being checked-in after 10 minutes of arriving however not ONCE was there an apology offered for the wait or inconvenience of waiting HOURS for my own room. To top all of this off, it was 20 minutes after 4 o'clock (the promised check-in time) when I had to suggest being moved to another room to the front desk staff so that I could make 5 o'clock plans.
The final kicker was when going up to my room, which was 2 doors down from my original room, the room I was originally supposed to stay in was ready & clean.
This was a very disheartening experience for a first time stay, as the resort itself is beautiful and the dining experience is unmatched. But the front desk staff certainly needs some work in hospitality and making their guests...
