Cathlamet, WA is a small town. There aren't many places to stay so having the Hotel Cathlamet in the town center is handy since it is within a 1000' to the bridge leading to Oregon.
We stayed here last night and booked a Columbia River queen bed room with shower. First off, the Hotel is very clean, very quiet, very comfortable. Laurel, proprietor who mans the reservations clerk is very informative and accommodating.
Because we were traveling via bike, I had to make a minor repair to my rear rack. Laurel found a staffer who drilled some holes in my wooden rack extender and provided me zip ties to secure it to the rack. Talk about small town hospitality and service. This was done immediately after we had just checked in. Timely, eh?
Our room is comfortable, climate control works, river view is nice, new windows open easily, bathroom is spotless, towels are super soft and new, bed and bedding are great, and there is no odor in the hotel nor the room(s). I checked a few other open ones.
With all rooms on the second floor, they also have a community room away from the main desk featuring board games, books, access to the patio, BBQ grill, deck chairs and a well equipped snack area.
Available at any hour in addition to complementary breakfast are such items as: orange juice, yogurt, pastries, several different breads (we were pleased there was no Wonder bread), a toaster, microwave and a Keurig coffee and hot water machine for making all your hot beverages. The coffee selections are numerous and the tea collection is pretty good. Other eats on the day we were there, included fresh fruit like bananas, apples, oranges, tangerine, and peach. Besides toast, butter, jam, cream cheese and pastries, they have an adequate selection of oat meals and dry cereal. Very nice given anything beyond that required actual cooking facilities.
The WiFi is fine and they have several routers to connect to in case signal strength is poor in the snack room. In-room flat screen HD TVs with cable provide ample channels, more than many places though we're not big fans. I think all the usual channels are available and video quality is excellent.
The recent remodeling is good, attractive and needed without being ostentatious. THe look and ambiance of the old hotel is still there. My wife really liked staying here commenting several times how clean and comfortable place was, how reasonable room rate was and the lovely amenities (even chocolates and magazines in the sitting room) as well as super soft and comfy leather easy chair and sofa. For those musically inclined, there's even a piano.
At check-in we discovered that if you come by bike, all cyclists receive a 10% discount on their room rate. We booked online and was unaware of this. When we asked about storing our bike, they realized we were cyclists, mentioned this perk and honored our discount. Then they allowed us to bring our tandem bike up the elevator and store it in the sun room. These are just a few examples of those nice little touches travelers seek that are hard to find in today with everyone so busy running fast with little time to interact.
Given how small Cathlamet is, you can walk to three of the four restaurants in town, two pizza joints, one burger place (1/4 mile east) and one Mexican-American restaurant. We ate at Maria's, the Mexican place, just across the street. Food is good and servings are large, even when I ordered off the Lunch menu.
We're off to Astoria today but if we ever return to Cathlamet, we will stay here. It's cozy and sparkling clean and staff are quite helpful.
Opportunities for improvement? Very few. Let's see, for us, it would have been nice to have peanut butter (tabs or a small jar). Butter, jam and cream cheese are nice but PB completes the list (at least for us). And having a guitar for those inclined would have been nice too. Not everyone can play the piano. Perhaps the worry is over theft?

Read moreI highly, HIGHLY, recommend staying here. My husband Juan and I couldn't find anywhere to stay for the night, but got extremely lucky to have found Hotel Cathlamet. We moved here from colorado, not knowing anyone at all, and have been really blessed with meeting Laurel. Laurel is one of the kindest people I have met because she genuinely cares about others, and I cannot say that about other Hotel owners. She really loves her business and takes the time to show it. It is a really old building with beautiful decorations and the expected squeaky floors. The house keeper there does an amazing job at keeping it cleaned and comfortable for the guests. It is well stocked with little goodies and simple foods that are open to the guests at anytime, and has awesome showers, the beds are super comfortable and it is in a beautiful location in a cute little town. It is well worth the money to stay here. I will definitely be coming back here.
Thank you so much for your hospitality, kindness, and being a friend Laurel. You made our move so much more enjoyable and we will be coming to visit...
Read moreWe really enjoyed our night’s stay at Hotel Cathlamet.
It is a very historic building. This means it’s been around a while, and it shows signs of this. The floors creak in some places and the walls can be thin in other places.
This didn’t bother us at all, it was a treat to stay in a clean and comfortable historic building.
The Staff was friendly and accommodating, check in was easy and quick. We arrived after the doors were locked so we used the call button, but there’s a phone number to call if needed too. We stayed during the week, and I suspect they’re busy time is weekends.
Continental Breakfast was good and simple (fruits, packaged oatmeal, coffee, pop tarts (my kids were pleased), and yogurt).
Kitchen/Game room was large and inviting. Kids enjoyed PacMan, and playing on the piano.
We found the beds to be quite comfortable. Mattress preferences are obviously quite subjective, but we had no complaints.
For the price and the location, we were very pleased. It fit our needs nicely.
We will look forward to our...
