First off Chama NM is a very small village. 915 as 2022, so keep that in mind if you choose to stay there. The place shuts down early so plan food before you arrive if you're coming after 6. The Lowes market is open until 9pm at the time of my review, luckily we had a cabin with kitchen. Although when we arrived everywhere but the speedway convenience store, a taco shop and a food truck was closed due to power outage, we had to drive to Pagosa Springs to get food 1.5 hrs away. We didn't get back to Chama until after 10. There's not much to the town I did find a park to take my son to. Google Gallegos baseball field and the park is there. We went there for the train ride, we always stay in Alamosa we wanted somewhere new so we chose to drive to the other train station location. The people of Chama are very friendly, some live in the neighboring town and drive there. Now the Cabin. I ended up booking the wrong cabin, the wording is not what I'm used too when booking cabins. I'm just thankful that I still had one with a kitchen. When we arrived it was after a storm so the weather was cool and nice, everything smelled amazing. When we walked in I was annoyed by only having 2 beds when I thought I had gotten 2 bedrooms my mistake, when we started unloading the car and getting a look at the cabin I was grossed out. The table and bedside table was sticky and had hair stuck in the gunk, their was food in the dirty freezer. Which I get I hate throwing away food, It was the lack of cleanliness that bothered me. The bathroom was ok at a glance the shower had hair all over the soap dispenser on the wall they have a body wash and a two-in-1 shampoo. Hair is the thing that gets me the most when I stay anywhere I can't even tolerate my own hair It makes my stomach turn. I couldn't handled the sticky spots but the hair just pushes everything for me. After driving for over 6 hours I went to go take a shower And boy oh boy I thought the hair was gross The smell that comes out of that water was beyond disgusting I did a quick wash and I didn't shower again after that. It's not like mildew or a stagant pond. The weird thing is the faucet water didn't smell like that. I thought maybe it was cuz the water was sitting for a while but you know even our last day there it was still so stinky and I ran the water a lot by that point. The dishes they were put away but they were not cleaned. They were more like a rinsed off and set in there. Although after our experience with the shower and the smell we were too afraid to use the water, we used our own bottled water to wash our dishes until we were able to go buy disposable dishes and utensils. Their gas fireplace is funny, I understand that is just there for the purpose of heating the room in the winter, you can tell they're doing everything they can't just save money. The playground was a big disappointment although my son finally got over his fear of swinging since that was the only thing they had next to some like monkey bars, someone his age can't do. The only way you're going to hear the water is walking to the water you can't see the water unless you walk to the water. Day two we boarded the train 10:00 a.m. we came back a little before 5:00 It was in the '90s our cabin was so hot we had every window open we had the door open there was no cooling it down It didn't start to cool down until 1:00 in the morning. There's no air conditioning which is typical for a cabin but the cabin is usually higher up in the mountains where it doesn't get in the '90s. I noticed that all the surrounding buildings lodges cabins all had air conditioning. Theres more I can say but not enough characters. If they invested in air conditioning and cleaning up this place it could be very nice like the other lodges...
Read moreWe stayed at the Elk horn Lodge the last weekend of July. 2025 We stayed in The Deer Crossing Cabin. It is an old mobile home. At first sight I noticed that the weeds in front of the cabin needed to be cut. When my 80 year old father was climbing the stairs he got a bunch of splinters in his hand from the stairs banister that definitely needed to be sanded down. When we walked in the smell of old musty smells, hit us right away. The couch was so old and dirty that my mother asked me to go to the nearest Family Dollar and buy sheets to cover it. It was so stained and stinky that we sprayed Febreze all over it and you could still smell how bad it was. The coffee table was so unstable that we were afraid to put our coffee or any drinks on top of it In the kitchen, the coffee maker didn’t work we called and they fix that right away. Most of the windows in the mobile home did not open and if they did open, they had tears on the screens that the insects were coming in no AC one fan for the whole mobile home two bedrooms. Mind you the temperatures were in the high 90s because we were there in July. The guest bathroom still had dirty washcloths in the bathtub In the master bedroom, the closet doors were missing knobs. The floor vent was missing the vent cover so who knows what could climb out of the floor at any point? I have reached out to the Elk horn Lodge and they have not responded to my emails or phone calls. If you’re going for Chama days this year I hope you don’t have the worst...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to take a trip to Chama and stay at Elkhorn Lodge. We chose Elkhorn Lodge because we wanted a hot tub to enjoy. My husband “chatted” online with someone confirming that there was a hot tub. When we arrived on site we were sorely disappointed when we were told there was no hot tub. We were told that they have people working for them all over the country on the online chat platform. We wish that they would communicate with all their employees about the accommodations that they do or do not have. We were charged a $100 deposit that we were never told about until it was too late, and had already been taken from our account. When I booked online through their website I was trying to book a King bed for us and it said they were all full only to get to the lodge and be the only people on site. It was a bit eerie, the sign also said “No Vacancy” when there was clearly vacancies. The man that checked us in was friendly. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. We did find old coffee in the coffee pot though, which was a bit gross. The heater was also very very noisy and woke me up on and off through the night from the noises that it made. We were hopeful about this little getaway and unfortunately it did not meet our expectations. We hope that others have a better experience...
