It was okay. We stayed here for a conference. I'll start with the good:
Staff are friendly, kind, helpful. Not a single bad experience there. The pool was clean and a decent temperature. We had a king room and it was very nice with a private-ish balcony. Great amenities like soaps, lotions, shaving/oral hygiene kit, robes and slippers, giant towels. The poolside food was ok. Not great. But the service there was phenomenal. The staff served many snacks and drinks throughout our conference. They offer a lot of activities but they are very pricey. Beds are comfortable. I slept very well. They offer you water and headphones when you check in the pool. That was appreciated.
The bad: The internet is awful. Especially if you try to use your room internet. Just stick with the resort wifi because the individual room wifi is the worst. This was a huge inconvenience having come here for a conference. They provide roku's with the TVs which is a nice attempt but you can't stream a single thing on their wifi so don't bother. We arrived at 5pm, hours after check-in and only 1 hour before our conference began. Made the reservation weeks in advance. But our rooms were not ready. None of them. They even called us early arrivals on the walkie-talkies. That's complete BS and they should have been better prepared having had a conference there. The meals for the conference were repetitive and mediocre. The chicken they kept serving had chewy skin and just was unflavored. The rice made me feel sick. When I checked in, I used a different card solely for my incidentals. They held $900 of my money for 2 whole business days. Not a big deal for the clientele who usually stay, but for a graduate student at a conference, it is a very big deal. Then I found out they erased the original card from the system (my boss was paying for the room) so that was a MAJOR inconvenience as they had already left. The coffee in the room is just bad. Sorry.
Also not that big a deal, but I really think they should have later hours for the adult pool. By the time you're done with your conference, tennis, golf, activities, etc, it would be nice to go to the pool to cool down but it closes at 9. But those aren't terrible hours so it's understandable. Just be prepared and knowledgeable that though they offer nice pools and you pay for these amenities, you probably won't have time...
Read moreThis place seriously needs some TLC. I can see how it was once a charming and refreshing place to stay. Now it seems tired, outdated, and needs some major sprucing up! I should have noted that most of positive reviews that I saw online were from more than a year ago.
When we first arrrived into our room (at Edna), we knew right away that we couldn't stay there - we saw dead stinkbugs on the floor, lady bugs on the blanket, other outdoor debris on the carpet, blankets that had thread falling out (couldn't replace this?) , stains on the carpet and wall, a weird musty smell, and our tv wasnt working properly. Housekeeping really didn't do their job did they? Hate to state this but even a 2 star hotel like Holiday Inn is cleaner. Obviously, I felt very disappointed and sad that what I thought was going to feel like a resort was starting to feel like a retreat center. I called the front desk and explained what I picked up on within minutes of walking in and was told we would be moved to the room next door. Well, the room was a little better, but there were still bugs all along the carpet especially near the window. Bugs and hotel should never be in the same sentence!!!
Thank goodness we were upgraded to another room adjacent to the main building, where the room was in much better condition - no bugs, no weird smell, and the furniture seemed in better condition.
Still...for a place that calls itself a resort and charges resort prices I expected more. The bathroom had no vents and the shower/tub needed some recaulking not to mention a more thorough tub cleaning, the outdoor screen door had a broken door siding, the only window in our room had a curtain rod that obviously wasn't leveled, and the coffee maker and hair dryer both seemed quite aged (or perhaps antiqued is another way I should see it?).
Some positive things - this place definitely has nice outdoor grounds, decent customer service, complimentary tea and coffee, and loads of potential for outdoor and sports activities. Seems like a good family place. Minus the price.
I don't know if it's just the winter season, but the boars head seems to lack a spirit of vitality or an edge when it comes to service/hospitality. I know the whole southern hospitality thing was hyped up as a big selling point, but I really didn't feel or sense the charm that it...
Read moreMy family and I decided to par take in the buffet option they had for Thanksgiving. For 75 dollars per person and only allowed to eat for 2 hours (30 minutes wasted in waiting to be seated), you can go around serving yourself. Where the food is cold, the fish taste rotten, the meat is flavorless, and to top it all off, you were eating the leftovers of the reservation before you. When the food ran out, their employees said we should be getting more anywhere between 10 to 40 minutes. Do you mean my whole reservation wasted to waiting for food? Turkey and Ham were empty. Their desert options were just a pumpkin and apple pie. With the possibility of having a small cookie (if they had any), their employees looked sad and hating life. I'm not sure how when the gratuity fee is 21 percent, which was forced upon your reservation. Alcohol wasn't provided as it was sold separately from the reservation. Silverware was dirty, NONE of the utensils used to grab food was cleaned, so remember it's being grabbed and touched by hundreds of hands before yours. The atmosphere of the dinner room seemed bland, with no decorations, just a big empty room with tables. No music at all playing, and the power shut off with no generator to kick on. Personally, I will never return to boars head, I will never recommend it to anyone and will share my experience publicly to every post I can think of. I know usually after a message the owners come out and post below "apologizing," but trust me when I say it's never gonna be worth it. They need to change their entire way of doing things. Until then, I would recommend a health inspector to look into their establishment and that the truth comes out about how terrible they are. This review was built after talking to the 9 other people in my reservation. I also hope that my stomach pains and diarrhea didn't come from them. I haven't been able to eat...
