The hotel itself was very nice. The rooms were clean, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom had a great shower, and had obviously been refreshed relatively recently. It was also very quiet, so it was easy to get a good night's sleep. I was able to adjust the air conditioning to my preferred temperature, something that's not always possible in hotels as they don't always allow you to turn it down to the level I like it. The setting is gorgeous: the grounds are lovely, and of course the hotel sits right on the lake so the view is beautiful. I was also able to take advantage of both swimming pools and the hot tub, because one of the days I was there it rained, so I appreciated the indoor pool, as did my family. The front desk staff was helpful.||Despite all of this, I can't give it full marks because of the restaurants. Eat someplace else. The day of our arrival we ate dinner in the bar and grill. The waitress didn't look like she wanted to be there, first of all. Secondly, despite the fact that it wasn't busy, it took a long time for someone to take our drink orders. We had to ask a woman who looked liked she might have been the manager to take them. When we got our food (there were only three of us), mine was missing my onion ring order, and my grilled chicken sandwich was very dry, as if they'd grilled a bunch of breasts ahead of time, then threw them in the fridge to be heated in the microwave when someone ordered a chicken sandwich. My brother said the chicken in his wrap was dry, too. When I asked our waitress about my onion rings, she said she forgot to put in the order, so she said she'd do it. I still didn't have them by the time we were finished, so when the check came and they were on it, I asked her to remove the charge. She then sounded surprised that I didn't want them anymore. The next morning, our whole group (seven of us, including two preschoolers, went to the nicer restaurant for breakfast. It also wasn't busy, which will be important. The menu was very limited, which was fine, so we didn't understand what was taking so long to get food. It was at least 20-25 minutes to get eggs and bacon. One person in our group only ordered a bagel and bacon, which came out first, so she gave her bacon to the little kids because they were getting restless. I've worked front-of-house before, so I'm very forgiving of service, but there really wasn't an excuse for it to take that long, since there were literally only about five other tables of people in the restaurant at the time, and, like I said, the menu was very limited (eggs, bagels, toast, pancakes,...
Read moreThe hotel update looks great based on first impression. The lobby, bar, restaurant area looked amazing. Our check in was not informative and the employee even went on to tell my mother that most people leave disappointed after staying there if they've stayed at the Heidel House in the past. Our room was clean and we enjoyed the updates. The updated shower was amazing. We did not have very many options to hang towels, but we made due with hanging them over the shower door. There were very few guests, most of our weekend we didn't see anyone except a few patrons and employees sitting at the bar... so we were confused why one of the only guests staying there was booked right next to us, they could have at least given a few rooms in between us, but we made due and wasn't a big deal... we just thought it was bizarre. The room did not offer any information. No restaurant information/ hours or menu. The room didn't have any wifi information, but after talking with the front desk, there's wifi it's just unsecured. We were the only ones eating at the restaurant at 530 on a Saturday, which also seemed bizarre. We had great food and excellent service there. The view of the sunset was absolutely stunning. The pool situation was awful. It would be nice to see a renovation. The air temperature was 54 degrees, we reported it and it was seemingly a shrug off "oh yeah an employee mentioned that a few days ago" and there was literally ice forming on all of the air vents. This was a main attraction for us as we were bringing a 5 year old who was looking forward to swimming all weekend and getting out of the cold. There were also broken tiles everywhere and garbage under chairs so we know that area of the hotel was not being cleaned. Overall, the stay was okay. I wouldn't pay more than the $130 I paid per night (off season price). Winter was a challenging time to stay, I'm sure in Spring and Summer that families would have more options than solely relying on the indoor pool. I would definitely recommend...
Read moreHeidelberg House was recently bought by a new owner. Looks like they have gone over the whole place! We booked our room thru some online service and sent a note requesting a balcony overlooking Green Lake per online instructions. The front desk thought we got a balcony but when we got to the room, no balcony. So we got another room. When we were going up to our room, my wife told me the room number and I guessed it didn't have a view of the lake, and I was right, plus no balcony! It did have a nice view of our car in the parking lot! One more trip down and she had pretty much had it with us! She told us the only room with a balcony was dirty and there wasn't any house keeping. So back to the first room. The lobby was never busy, but our walk around the campus looked like most of the lake side rooms were probably occupied. We felt that there must have only been 2 or 3 hotel staff on duty and the front desk lady must have been really new. We saw that visitors had to ask to have the outdoor fireplace turned on and I noticed it was still on the next morning with a couple bear cans on the table and all the cushions were out of place on the 3 outdoor couches. That would lead me to believe that no one did rounds last night or when they first got in in the morning. They hadn't reopened the lower level bar that served burgers n such, so we had to eat at the fancy main dinning area. The menu was too fancy for me and my wifes tastes. We ended up just ordering a soup, salad, and appetizers: bang bang shrimp was fantastic and the 3 bacon wrapped scallops should have been called bacon w a hint of scallop! I ended up discarding the super strong bacon outer shell and just eating the 2 remaining scallops. Looks like they are planning some expansion on the lot next door. We have been yearly visitors and I would suggest they focus on the current paying...
