We recently stayed at SCP Mendocino and had a lovely experience overall. I’d rate the property and amenities 5 stars, the room 5 stars, and the bathroom in the bedroom 2 stars.
The property is stunning, with llamas to visit and chickens to feed—our kids found it absolutely magical. It’s a short walk across the highway to a gorgeous beach, and there’s another trail nearby that we’d love to explore without the kids next time.
The on-site restaurant is exceptional. On our first night, we enjoyed two delicious pizzas, an amazing roasted cauliflower dish, and Pinot Noir from Lichen Estate and Navarro. The cozy dining room, complete with a fire, made for a charming and memorable evening. The lobby is equally inviting, with fresh cookies always available, a cold water refill station, hot water for tea, and great music playing in the background.
We stayed in the Carriage Loft, the only room option that could comfortably accommodate us and our two young kids. The room was spacious, featuring a king bed, a pull-out couch, a small fridge, a microwave, and a coffee maker stocked with ample coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. The kids had no complaints about the pull-out couch, and there were plenty of extra pillows and blankets to keep them warm. The king bed was also very comfortable, with soft sheets and good pillows. We loved the small patio off the room, where we could see the chickens right from bed. Storage was generous with a large closet and dresser.
However, the bathroom was disappointing. While it was a good size with a walk-in shower featuring dual showerheads, one showerhead never provided hot water. The wall-mounted shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel dispenser felt like it belonged in a budget motel and detracted from the otherwise upscale feel. The pedestal sink offered very little counter space, which was inconvenient—especially since there’s no housekeeping service, meaning guests need more space to manage coffee cups and wine glasses. The sink faucets were noticeably grimey and overdue for replacement. Additionally, there was no soap provided in the bathroom for handwashing, which seemed like an oversight.
The toilet and bidet were functional, but it might make sense to combine them to create a larger sink area. Another small drawback: the half-window above the patio doors lacked a shade, so light poured in early in the morning. Light sleepers might want to bring an eye mask.
Despite these issues, there were many thoughtful touches that stood out, like the ceiling fan and the wonderful breakfast delivery each morning. Our kids appreciated the plain scrambled eggs made just for them! The property is also dog-friendly and offers ample EV charging, which is a bonus.
Lastly, I can’t say enough good things about the staff—everyone we interacted with was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made our stay even better.
I would absolutely return to SCP Mendocino, especially if the bathroom received some much-needed updates. The stunning property, excellent amenities, magical experience for kids, and exceptional staff far outweighed the minor...
Read moreStayed over recently after a long day trip. Called that evening and booked a room. Was given a room with a 'garden view' called River Rock. First impressions after entering the room - simple and fine for a quick overnight stay.
Soon after entering the shower I noticed the hot water temperature fluctuated quite a bit. It went really cold then hot, back and forth several times. Really annoying. Also this room has a really small shower. Next up no TV in this room. Fine looked around for reading materials, none found. There is also no refrigerator in the room. I found out next morning that there is a shared fridge in the main house. Speaking of next morning. This is where the real fun begins. Few steps away is a shared hallway where they have coffee/tea prior to 9AM breakfast which is served in your room. I left the room to get a cup of coffee to come back and find out that the room key wouldn't work. This was NOT an electronic key instead a traditional metal key. How in the world would the key not work! At first I thought I might be using the wrong key well, that wasn't case as the key given is put on a big key ring. Next I walked around to see if I could flag anyone at the facility not a single person in-sight. I found a posting in the hallway to call a number in case of emergencies. Called them at 730AM goes to some sort of answering service who takes down your number and pages someone at the facility. 8AM no one shows up or calls, I call back once more. 830AM no one calls or shows up, I call again for the third time at 845PM, still no response. What is the point of having this number and service if no one every responds? At 9AM I got a hold of one of the guys who was delivering breakfast baskets to rooms. He also tried the same key to find out that it didn't work. What a surprise. He tried his master key and same results. At this point I was ready to get out of here, I just wished I had my belongings. Luckily the maintenance guy was able to sneek thru one of the windows which was left unlocked!
WOW never again
On my way out I called the hotel and requested to speak to the General manager. I was told that he (the owner) was not currently available and that he would call me back within 24-hours. That has not happened as of this posting.
My advice find a different place to stay, this town is...
Read moreI booked a night's stay at SCP Mendocino inn and Farm on my road trip with my baby brother. Overall, the experience is positive and fun and would recommend staying for a night or two if you happen to be driving passing this area.
We booked the king room which is nice, clean, and bright with lots of windows. However, I personally felt that the square footage of the room to be a bit small and due to all the windows, the room could be quite hot during the day even with all the window shades down (no AC) and slightly on the colder side at night (does have heaters). The common area is quite spacious and well-managed in all aspects and that's indeed where we spent lots of time in the daytime.
The staffs are all very friendly and helpful--the property shines because of them.
One does not have direct view of the sea from this property, but the beach is close and there are llama farm, chickens, garden, and hiking trails on site--so lots of fun activities can be planed. The complimentary breakfast is also fresh and delicious, and thumbs-up for the hearty meal. Below is the Kayak tour review promised to Nicole (sorry it took me a while to getting to write this):
We ended up booking our kayak tour with kayak Mendocino and we set off from the Van Damme Beach at 2 pm. The weather was excellent and the temperature very comfortable. We had about fifteen people in our tour and two guides to lead us. The guides are very nice and helpful--pointing to all the points of interests (like seals and sea stars) and telling us what to expect once in a sea cave (like a sharp turn or a shallow spot to avoid). The entire experience felt fun and safe, and my initially nervous brother was so confident towards the end of the tour that he wanted to kayak again with my father to teach him the sport although all his paddling does along the trip is to splash water into my face but I digress... We took a tandem and the price is $160 without any additional tips one might leave (cards & apple pay accepted). I would recommend the tour to you as it is a good opportunity to get to know the sea caves in the vicinity and to have some experienced people watching over you as you explore the fantastic shoreline. Hope you have fun and all the...
