This was our first experience staying at a YMCA hotel/lodge/campus. It was OK, but would have been a lot better if I had known what to expect. The good: This lodge had a decent-sized area on the 3rd floor to congregate which ocerlooked a larger area on 2nd floor. Then the basement had a large area also. The views were amazing! Almost everywhere you looked you could see mountains. There were also Elk and deer wandering around the buildings. There are free activities around the campus such as mini golf, gymnasium, indoor pool (more about that later), giant chess... No TVs in the rooms. Some consider this a bad thing, but there's more than enough to do in the area.
The bad: Beds were not comfortable. Bedding was rough, pillows were worn-out, sheets and blankets were tucked too far into the foot of the bed (made them short, but easy fix). No daily room service. Not a big deal, but most hotels have someone come by daily to make beds, take out trash, replace towels... They may have taken out trash, but that's it. The pool experience was terrible! It's only open a few hours a day because they staff it with life guards. I'm fine watching my own kids and do anyhow, so a "lifeguard-free", "parent supervised" swim time would be fantastic. Becuase they have lifeguards, they limit the number of people in the building depending on how many lifeguards are present. We walked down and waited in the cold for 30 minutes just to get the opportunity to come in. Communication among staff members and with customers seems terrible. I called on my cell to find out if the pool was open and was asked to hold for about 5 min. I walked back to my room and dialed 0 and immediately spoke to someone who told me the pool was open. She didn't tell me that the pool was over-occupied and we wouldn't be able to get in. The free Wi-Fi doesn't appear to be configured securely. I scanned the network and found many devices connected and accessible to me. Client to client communications should be blocked.
Would I stay here again? Maybe - if the price is right. I'd bring my own pillows, possibly bedding, and maybe a travel router for security. I'd consider the pool non-existent since you may not be able to get in. I was very convenient if there's a...
Read moreWe stayed here with our toddler in mid August with the Military Getaway Package. We were assigned the Longs Peak Lodge where the rooms all have mini refrigerators.
Temperature: The temperatures during our stay were low 80s during the day and low 50s at night. We kept the windows closed at night since our daughter is a light sleeper and events can tend to occur up to 8 or 9 at night. Temperatures in the room would normally be around 79 degrees up until 9-ish.
Noise: The doors in the lodge are incredibly loud. We tended to go to sleep early to be at the hikes earlier but doors slamming kept us up to 9:30 or 10 on most nights. Since the YMCA does hold events for groups of people, I would say this was our big negative since we are lighter sleepers.
Area: The lodge and the views around the YMCA are incredible. There are a ton of activities to do up there and RMNP hiking trails are within 35 minutes away if you're on the road by 7:45 AM and there is no construction in the park. Look at the website to prepare yourself. We didn't and our expected 35 minute drive was an hour and change.
Overall: We highly recommend you stay here. Our daughters sound machine helped her stay asleep in the noisy conditions so it could be something...
Read moreAmple room, comfy beds. Very basic. Dresser, table & chairs. That's about it. No TV, no AC, but the tower fan and ceiling fan that came with the room were enough to keep cool. As others have mentioned, the doors in other rooms bang loudly when they close. This was a problem, but the lodge does enforce quiet hours (only 11 pm - 6 am, however). A sound machine or white-noise generator helped, though. We booked two years ahead of time in order to get a block of rooms in the lodge. The food was not bad, considering that the cooks have had to change their game plan and make do with whatever they can make right now. Above all, the reason to pick this place is the location. The views are unreal. Animals are abundant, including frequent deer and elk encounters. The staff at the YMCA is great as well, and helped with endless hiking options, archery, horseback riding, ax throwing, roller skating, mini golf, disc golf, and so much more. The RMNP is right there, too, which adds another layer of...
