This review is for golf only. My friend and I made the trip from Pittsburgh to play on July 12 and July 13, 2025. We did not do a stay and play package, so we just booked our tee times online and played both courses as a twosome.
We played the Founders Course on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 12:15pm for $69/each, a great value for a course such as this. The pace of play was excellent with not another group in sight until the par 3 17th which two other groups on the tee box when we came off the 16th green. There were a lot of bugs all over the course - maybe gnats or something that would fly into your eyes or up your nose. Bug spray mitigated the problem, but did not keep them away completely. And hold your breath through the tunnel. It smells like a sardine factory. My only complaint was that the practice range was mats only, even though it seemed my playing partner and I were the only ones adhering to that rule.
We left our clubs at the course overnight and our cart was ready for us when we came to play Iron Forge on Sunday, July 13, 2025. We had a 11:10am tee time and booked it online for $74, again a good deal. Best part of Iron Forge is the lack of trees gives you more of a breeze than Founders. I can not say that it was the 5-7mph breeze but there were no bugs on Iron Forge. We caught the foursome ahead of us by the second hole (as a twosome would), but they offered to let us play through. By the 15th hole the cart GPS was telling us we were 29 minutes ahead of pace. For some reason, just like on Founders, a late round par 3 was creating a log jam. On Iron Forge, it was the 16th. There were two foursomes on the tee and a third still on the green when we got there. We ended up pairing up with the twosome behind us and playing the last three holes together.
I only have two complaints.
First, they really need a cart person. We had a cooler with beer and stocked up on ice waters at the starter's booth, but those were melted and warm by the fifth or sixth hole. Especially on hot days like we had, being able to get a cold water and/or a sports drink in the middle of the round would have been very welcomed.
My other complaint has nothing to do with the course, itself, or staff and is certainly not unique to Penn National, but people need to 1. learn how to correctly repair ball marks in the green and 2. take the 30 seconds to do it. So many people were just popping up the center of their ball marks and tamping them down, leaving dirt bullseyes that will not grow in, instead of pushing the edges into the center. In additional to our own and since we had the time, my partner and I repaired three additional ball marks each on almost every green. If I were a member/resident, I would be upset about the ball marks. As a guest, I have just learned to...
Read moreSome of the 21 ladies I golfed with have been coming to Penn National for 17 years. This was my 2nd year and I thoroughly enjoy the 3 rounds of golf during the three days. The courses are in great shape with the Iron Forge more open with fewer trees so may be very hot depending on the weather. The Founder's Course has more trees and this year the greens were slower than Iron Forge. The rooms are very large (maybe about 15' by 25') with 2 full size beds, a mini fridge, a sink outside the bathroom (rather small), large flat screen TV with cable, round table and 3 chairs and a 20' long counter top with a coffee maker. The AC unit worked well and the bathrooms and other area very clean. Some of the rooms even had a microwave and sink. The next day they even replaced our towels. The staff at check in can't be more pleasant and recognized many of the people going for the 17 years, the wait staff are friendly, helpful and with pots of coffee, the outside staff is efficient and friendly and ride the course with ice and water (very much needed on our weekend in Sept. in upper 70s/low 80s). Lots of options in the pro shop (even for women!) The food is ok with many options including a breakfast bar with pastries, oatmeal, make your own waffles, yogurt, fruit, etc. Dinner has a salad and dessert bar or ask for ice cream. They are so very accommodating. The units have 4 rooms on each of the 2 floors and large round table on each floor to have snacks and/or play games. They have an large ice chest filled at the entrance of each building with about 12 plastic chairs outside and another 8 metal chairs inside. ...
Read moreWe recently had an event for 72 people at the Trellis that is operated by Altland House. It was a retirement party do we were not looking for a class A facility.
Working with Chris and her staff was easy. She communicated well leading up to the event and it was prepared for us on time. Her staff was present during the event and kept us informed of everything we needed to know. All we had was the burgers and dogs special and the food quality was good.
The Trellis itself needs work. Be reminded it is not heated or cooled so keep that in mind. The pictures on the website are somewhat deceiving. There are no usable horseshoe pits or beach volleyball as the site mentions. The price is $500 which is high, but I was told to go somewhere else if I wanted higher quality by the management team. The facility is showing its age and the floors and sidewalks need a good cleaning and the windows need washing. A paint job is also in order.
The Trellis has promise but just needs work to bring it up to Penn National standards. Seth did a great job of working with me during the day. There are restrooms but they are tiny and folks had a few comments about the quality of fixtures.
I would return to the Trellis for a casual event but it needs work for anything other than that. There are nicer options in the area such as the Orchards but the location on the golf course makes this a viable option.
Food was good, location was excellent but the facility was...
