With Hanksville as our destination, lodging was a bit limited. The Whispering Pines was one of the few motels in the area. Other lodging contained more expenses cabins at campgrounds and other sites. It was surprising that the room rate was around $160 for a motel, but that was the cheapest option in the area. The Whispering Pines is conveniently located on scenic highway 95. In fact, the drive into Hanksville from the east is one of the most beautiful drives, we have ever experienced. It had plenty of off-street free parking with turn around space for larger vehicles. It is a retro motel, so you can park right at your door. It is comprised of two buildings -- one of which is two stories without elevators so consider that when booking your room. We had booked online and the check in was efficient and fast. The room was spacious with a large king bed, plank floors, and a separate vanity from the toilet and tub/shower. There was a lounge chair and a separate desk with chair. It was a clean room and generally clean grounds. It is near a gas station with conveniences including a burger restaurant. Across the street is a more upscale restaurant near the Roadsideamerica.com attraction the Hollow Mountain Gas Station -- an operating Sinclair gas station with its store in a mountain cave. Hanksville is a great central location to take in many of the sites in the area. It is very close to the amazing Goblin Valley State Park. The room had a mini fridge with no freezer section and a microwave. There was a hairdryer but no iron and board. There is a free reliable ice machine. Internet was free and reliable. There was not breakfast but a breakfast food truck was open nearly by. There is also a coin operated laundry. The motel was relatively quiet throughout the evening despite being...
Read moreThis review is considering the hotel-class/type of property. Honestly, the Whispering Sands motel exceeded our expectations. What it lacks in grandeur, it makes up with a well-stocked and clean room, enough amenities and efficient check-in/check-out. Pretty decent and free WiFi. The room was spacious enough, well appointed with a microwave & fridge. We really appreciated the complimentary snacks and bottles of water. Supplemented with good toiletries, the bathroom, although small, did not feel cramped. There was even an exaust and a separate heat-lamp in there. A hair dryer and various towels are provided. Ice is available in the laundry room. Do note that the office is open only from 3 pm to 10 pm so if you're checking in late (or have questions for check out), call ahead. Food options in the area are limited mostly to the two adjacent restaurants: Burger Shack closes at 9 pm and Slickrock Grill closes at 10 pm. There are a couple of gas stations in the area. Overall, if you're looking to overnight for Goblin Valley or Factory Butte to minimize your drive to either, Whispering Sands is an excellent choice. If you need to spend time at Capitol Reef, you can check out the accomodations in that immediate area. If you're visiting further east the next day (Canyonlands, Arches), might as well...
Read moreWhispering Sands is a wonderful recently remodeled motel. Clean rooms. Comfortable beds; high water pressure in shower; quiet air conditioner. Can pull your vehicle right up to the room door. Large off road vehicle park in the middle of its massive parking lot And thereby do not effect the regular vehicle parking by the motel rooms doors. Ice machine is under the stairs in the middle of the motel. Half of motel is two floors. We booked the single level area, since we do not do stairs. Hanksville, is a very, very small town. And this is our second time there. To revisit Goblin State Park 40 minutes away. And go off road to see the Mars Research facility just outside of town. First thing we did when we got to town is to buy a T-shirt "Where The Hell Is Hanksville". Two T-shirt shops (one in a cave by the gas station) and the other by the second gas station. Yes Hanksville has two gas stations. And one great restaurant two blocks from the motel. Ducks Slickrock Grill.|"Duke" owns the RV park/the restaurant/the hamburger place and the gas station next to it... He has put a lot of money into this town to make it as great as it is. And he employs good...
