Hillsboro Inn & Suites — Hotel in Hillsboro

We came to town for a concert at a private venue nearby. It was a bit of a crapshoot between the three tired looking hotels listed for the small rural town of Hillsboro, Ohio. We lost! In 10 minutes we had seen enough. The room appeared not to have been cleaned in awhile. There were spider webs in the corners of the bedroom and bath, insect feces on the carpet and unfinished drywall repair in the bathroom. The bed was wrapped in plastic. A woman (presumably our next door neighbor) was chain smoking as she sat on the indoor furniture on the outdoor porch in front of our non-smoking room. She might as well have been inside with us, as the stale smoke kind of permeated everything. As we left seeking something less "terrible," I was promised a refund to my credit card by the person manning the front desk. He indicated that the owner/manager would have to handle this transaction when he came in the next day. After three weeks, the refund had not arrived. When I called the owner/manager, he flatly refused to refund my money. When I referenced the fact that his employee had promised the refund... he indicated that he was "not really an employee." Among his last words to me were... "There's nothing you can do about it!" On this point, he is...

I booked a room in this hotel for my son and two grandsons to stay while visiting as we don't have room in the house. I thought it would be a nice hotel since it was recently refurbished. My grandson (with red hair) slept in one bed and son and other grandson slept in the other. Grandson with red hair found black hair strands in his bed. Since he has red hair they obviously weren't his but left from a previous guest. So do they even change the sheets after a stay? Also found some nasty looking brown stuff on the bathroom wall. My son said he wasn't staying there the second night. He handed in the key. I called the manager and told him what happened and he denied it. He said I couldn't get a refund for the second night. I complained more and he said he would have another manager call me. Never received a call. Called and talked to the same guy and he said there would be no refund for the second night. I told him a bad review was in order then and he didn't want that but still wouldn't refund the second night. So here is the bad review...

Nothing about this room was as advertised. They had advertised a microwave and fridge, but neither one was there. It was to have been a non-smoking room, but it was very obvious that someone had indeed been smoking. The smell was very strong. Teeny tiny bathroom. Very small bath towel and washcloth. No hand towel. Could clearly hear what was going on in the next room. A/C wasn't cooling properly. ||I wasn't in the room more than 15 minutes and my face started to swell and I had trouble breathing. ||Searched online quickly for another motel in the area. Found one and then went and asked for a refund. They gave a refund and tried to intimidate me by saying all other motels in town are full (which was not true at all!!). ||I cannot recommend this motel to anyone. It's maybe cheap but not worth it.
