We spent three nights tent camping here July 30 - Aug 2. We were moved from the site we had booked to #23. The site had a great view of Badlands National Park. The picnic table at this site has a significant lean to it and is really old, the site did not have one of the picnic table covered shelters like the website shows, other sites have those and newer tables. The shower house is typical for a campground, wetness is expected, we found it to be reasonably clean and the water was hot. The faucets in several sinks pull away from the sink which was weird. Also, as a tent camper it would be nice if one of the areas had a room just with a toilet/sink. I would wake in the morning, needing to go to the toilet and would have to wait 10-15 minutes for someone to finish showering in one of the 4 rooms. The pool is still down, as in walls down, not just waiting on a liner. Camp store and everything you might need, prices were OK for tourist / small shop.
However, there was one big drawback. As we set up our tent an alarm at the nearby RV dump site (located very close to our site) started going off. It sounds like a smoke alarm, loud constant alarm sound. It stopped after 5-10 minutes. I went and told the gal working in the store, she said she would check on it. We passed her as she was finishing checking it and she said it isnt going off anymore and that "it hadn't gone off in a long time. Sometimes it does when there is a lot of rain or a lot of people are showering". I said ok, thanks. It went off again later that evening so I told staff again just before the store closed. It went off many times during the night. As in more than a dozen each night. I literally kept track the second night and while I did sleep solid from midnight -4am I still recorded it going off over 20 times from 9:30pm until 8:30am. I told staff about it again the morning after our first night and the morning after our second night. The response was, "oh, ok, I'll go hit the reset button". Clearly that was not fixing the issue. I hit the reset button myself a couple of times during the middle of the night. I heard other tenters/car/van campers complain about it amongst themselves but I don't know if they spoke with staff. It could clearly be heard throughout the entire tenting area. It was like an alarm clock going off that we couldn't turn off. It would alarm for 1-10 minutes and then go silent for 10 minutes to an hour. Very random and made for a lot of waking up in the middle of the night.
While the location was great, I'm not sure I'd stay here again due to the alarm noise and lack of fixing the issue over the 3 nights we were there. I spoke with one staff person twice and then two other staff people.
We did appreciate the recommendation for Katie's Cantina, a Mexican food truck, it was great! Get a burrito and the chickles. Also, go to the ranger programs at 8:30 by the Parks visitor center, they were great! We loved Badlands...
Read moreI found this little gem a few months before a June roadtrip - a no-frills stop only a 10 min drive away from the most popular trails in the Badlands. We drove in from Custer, entering the park from the south along Sage Creek Road, stopping at all of the overlooks before staying here for the night. The next day, we left early to do all the hikes before driving to Wall. ||Because I booked early, I got a room with 2 queen beds for a song. It was basic 2- star accommodation which is what you get near most national parks whether you pay more or not. ||Friendly check in at the store. We were given info about the store and food served there, as well as food served in the small town of Interior. We went to The Wagon Wheel For a late dinner as suggested and it was decent. Basic menu with foods you really can't mess up. We ordered a pizza. || The building was single level and quiet. The room was a good size and clean. The beds were the same as all the beds we'd slept in throughout Wyoming and Montana - a little worn and hard, but not uncomfortable. ||The A/C and Wi-Fi worked well. Old furniture, no microwave, but had a mini fridge. ||The long concrete "shared porch" runs the length of the building. We didn't sit out there because it was hot and the porch faced the parked cars in a gravel lot. ||The bathroom sink was small and old, but it, the shower, and the toilet worked and had decent pressure. No problem with hot water. ||The pool was a shallow above-ground pool. We arrived late and left early, so we didn't see anyone use it. ||In the morning, we ordered breakfast at the store. There is one cook and one cashier who also busses the 4 or 5 tables. ||When we first came in, the area was full. 10 minutes later, it was empty. If it's busy, eat in your room, or simply browse the gift store while your order is prepared. By the time it's ready, the large families will have finished. || I had an egg and bacon breakfast sandwich, and my buddy had a breakfast burrito. At $8, the food was tasty and cheaper than anywhere in California, so we were happy.||Check-out was easy and friendly. We bought a few trinkets at the gift shop (which I later saw at Walmart in Rapid City for only $1 less, so again, reasonably priced). ||I would stay here again. Basic accommodation at a surprisingly cheap price just minutes from a national park - it was the best value of the trip! Especially when compared to the dumpy accommodations found far outside Yellowstone at...
