Interior......what a place, Interior of the butthole South Dakota to be exact. Stopped in at the end of our honeymoon road trip with my wife who was hungry for a Bison Burger before head south to go home. Looked like a promising local joint for some authentic bison. Started off well, even though the bartender was drunk, and the local drunk was rambunctious in the middle of the day on Saturday. The cook had "stepped out" and when he came back in we had our food realitivly fast after hearing the microwave open, shut, and beep. Pretty sure it was just a normal burger, and absolutely sure it was precooked and reheated. Small, dry, tasteless, and nothing like every bison burger I've ever had. ....but hey we were hungry and there are no other options when in the Interior of a butthole....
To be fair, the fries and onion petals were super fresh and good!
When it came time to pay, the bartender/waiter sat down to eat. I mean, not like a quick bite, he had a fork and knife sitting down at the bar to eat. Mind you he and the cook are the only ones working. So we had to bring our money up to him to pay. But hey, gave us a chance to see their fine selection of booze and bar decorations near the front.
Also, super curious about the mystery shot. They have jars on the bar advertising for. If you go still, cause there is no other option if you're that hungry, you should...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this great little place while exploring the South area of Badlands National Park. We were immediately greeted and directed to sit wherever we wanted to. Our Server was very friendly and food came out quickly.
We ordered a burger with onion petals and steak on a bun with a side of potato chips. Burger was good, steak was flavourful, a little chewy but good flavour and size. Prices were reasonable, relaxed, casual place with pool table and some machine games.
Lots of $1.00 bills around signed by guests, which was interesting to read. Wifi for guests may have been helpful as we needed to check our location proximity to next destination.
We also stopped by the general store down the same road to inquire about renting a side by side vehicle. We only had time for an hour, so we didn't rent one as the lowest price offered was for longer than that and I didn't want to spend $180US for an hour. Good deal for longer, it just didn't work for us. Same owner runs restaurant and store, I wish you all the luck, you've got great businesses, in a...
Read moreI have been to many bars in my life, from small town, to big city to everything in between. The Wagon Wheel is easily near the top tier for me. It's not fancy, they don't have 5 Michelin Star food, or draft beer. But what they do have is the atmosphere of friendly local folks and employees. LuLu is one of the all around nicest individuals I have ever met. She'll laugh at your stupid jokes and smile while handing you another drink even when the bar is slammed pack and she is solo. Food is exceptional for being in the middle of nowhere (especially the gizzards and onion petals) all food is made when you order it. There is a jukebox, pool table, slots/keno etc..., dice, mystery shots, bar seating, table seating, booth seating, dollar bills everywhere from all around the world, and some of the funniest and nicest regulars you're likely to ever come across.
Long story short, if you're in the Badlands, swing on by for a drink and some food. Enjoy the Wheel for what it is. An oasis in the middle...
