Read moreWell, the “charm” of this hotel was definitely lost on me!! By “charm” they must mean old and tired!! It started with the parking situation. Their website stated that there was parking in the rear. I mistakenly ASSUMED that there would be some way to unload my luggage after parking. HOWEVER, their “parking” is a city lot, which has painted signs everywhere indicating 3-hour, 5-hour and 10-hour parking, when in fact, I was staying overnight! Needless to say, I was totally confused. I was also not impressed with the fact that there was a homeless woman there asking a local police officer for a pair of socks!!! I parked in the 10-hour, only to find out that there was now no way to get my luggage all the way around the block to the entrance of the hotel, other than carrying it myself (and I am NOT a light packer). In addition, there was NO RAMP to roll your luggage up to the entrance (which I thought was an ADA requirement??). Instead, there were numerous steps. Luckily, a man walking by offered to help me carry everything up the stairs!! As soon as I walked into the lobby, the musty smell hit me, and it confirmed that I had made a terrible mistake staying there. I was given my room key and, once again, my disappointment was overwhelming. The narrow hallway and “well-worn” carpet were depressing enough, but the worst was the 10X10 room, which felt like an antique jail cell!! The carpet was stretched and buckled thus creating a trip hazard. There was no refrigerator, and the baseboard under the window was chipped and water damaged. The humor of all of this was that the woman at the front desk repeatedly told me that ANY damage to the room would be taken out of my credit card. I am 72 years old!!! WHAT kind of damage could I possibly do??? Several of the water holes in the shower head were not functioning, so the remaining holes were emitting a HUGE amount of pressure especially on your face/head feeling as if you were getting pummeled with a fire hose. I like good pressure in the shower just as much as the next person, but this was ridiculous! There was no way to adjust the head itself or the type of spray on the head, so I was stuck with it. The “fitted sheet” was not the proper size for the bed, so the sheet was constantly bunched and buckled under you as you attempted to sleep. This is a quote on Yelp from Chuck S. (the manager)…….. The National Hotel is now a full service, luxury boutique hotel offering guests opulent...
Read moreI looked forward to experiencing the old charm, and enjoying the local food and drinks down the main street at our leisure. It's not the cookie-cutter feel of modern overnights, next to the generic fast food choices. That's what I tend to look for when I get away to relax. The desk, while accommodating, was more like stressed damage control. We had reservations, and backed out in the end.
When we arrived Friday afternoon, there was a line of people more or less doing the same thing, but for different reasons. Being an old hotel with character, I understand that the air conditioning on the second floor wasn't working. I even understand that some windows may not open, along with being out of fans. I accept that (though every room should at least have a fan and window guaranteed).
When we were helped, they gave us our keycard to see if we were okay with the room before paying, in case we decide to back out as well. The room was fine. Had a tub along with separate shower. However, someone else's luggage was still in there, which I'm pretty sure isn't part of the deal.
We came back and explained the situation, and they apologized by offering an upgrade to a room with a view, with a choice of view, for the original price. I chose the balcony view looking over the main street: it was tempting... but we realized we were traveling around the area, not just sitting in our room. If there was another mistake, which from what we saw waiting in line was seemingly commonplace, that's our stuff with random strangers. We lost faith in the security of our room and luggage.
Originally I said I'd try and be back in a slower, cooler season, but stewing on things after I left, that isn't certain. A season won't change how the logistics at the desk works. There needs to be a solid system to know what is available or not, and that can't be blamed on the age of the hotel. Back in the late nineteenth century, if there was a key hanging on that numbered hook, that was the signal. Find something that works, and we'll be back. Hopefully we can get some reassuring reviews to...
