The hotel itself is decent. Good location, close to the airport. The small tree tunnel driving into the hotel is nice. It’s outdated, but it’s nice. I had a major issue hence why I left a 1 star review because it was that bad…
The first night we were in our room we noticed 2 cockroaches in/near our room but 1 was outside so not a big deal as we are on an island so that does happen. The 2nd night, we noticed there were 3-4 roaches on the tv stand. Super gross, but we were told this is common. So we smashed and disposed of them and went to bed because we didn’t see anymore. The 3rd night, after we came in around 10pm, the room had several roaches all over the tv stand, crawling on the fridge, IN the mini fridge where our food was, and on our nightstand!!!!!!!! I immediately called the front desk, but it was gross because as I was calling the front desk there were literally roaches on the phone and night stand. I was screaming in terror as I’m on the phone with the front office. They gave us a new room, but it was 10:30pm at night (super late my normal time) and they did not offer to help move, no nothing. They did not want to compensate anything, but finally did pay for us to have breakfast the next day. I asked to talk with the manager after I got some sleep and food, but they refused to do anything additional for us besides wave some waive some parking fees and the $100 breakfast. To me, dealing with that, was not enough. THERE WERE ROACHES IN OUR FRIDGE IN OUR FOOD AND ALL OVER THE ROOM!!!!!!
I reached out to the manager again after our vacation and they wouldn’t do anything because they said “they compensated us with breakfast”. I reached out to Costco to have them help, and the refused to do anything so Costco couldn’t do anything either. I talked to someone with outrigger hotels customer service and they were horrified of the story and pictures/videos. I told the Costco complaint team and she was even grossed. So clearly there is an issue with management not acknowledging that they were in the wrong. Not to mentioned, as I was in the hotel lobby getting towels, there were other people having issues too. They couldn’t find a manager so it was just a mess.
Pool: The pool area is awesome! They have the waterfall, 2 hot tubs, 3 pools, and a kid pool. Arrive early to get a spot by the pool if you want. The slide is awesome, but the hours are disappointing. Everyday they close at 4:40pm which is unfortunate because it doesn’t give enough time for everyone to use it. So just plan for that. I saw kids crying when it was shut down bc there was still plenty of day light left.
Beach: There is no swimming at the beach because of the water conditions. You can chill in the sand or go knee deep, but that’s about it. It was very relaxing to chill by the beach. The sand, as soon as you get out to the beach, is clean however the more you walk down the more trash you will see. That’s not their fault, just super unfortunate to see how trashed the water is in the area and the beach. Looking at some of the other beaches around the island trash wasn’t that much of an issue or they take care of it. So be warned you will see a bunch of trash was up that they don’t really clean. The day before we arrived there was a beach clean up. With the amount of trash we saw it did not look like anything was cleaned up…
No microwave: they have 1 on some random floor. Very disappointing because if you spend a lot of food and have left overs, you can’t eat it hot
Internet: You will not get the best service at this hotel. Their wifi is ok, but could have been alot better. The last time I stayed in Kauai I had no problems so I’m not sure why this hotel was so different.
Parking: there is a daily parking fee which is annoying. It’s covered which I guess is nice, but if you don’t get a close spot you are walking for a while to get your vehicle. It’s more expensive if you get valet which I heard took awhile.
I would highly recommend to stay at a different hotel. The price is ok, but honestly, spend the $200 more and find a...
Read moreMy boyfriend had booked us the outrigger resort in Kauai. Upon arriving we realized that a vehicle would be needed since the hotel does not have access to any buses, or shuttles. The location of the hotel is in a beautiful area, close to the Lihue Airport which was convenient.
Upon arriving, all staff working just outside the front doors were always very accommodating and very helpful, we appreciated their service, as they were always so friendly and ready to help through out entire stay. Check in was smooth, however we were not aware of the daily resort fee, since we had booked through Expedia and though all charges were already taken care of there.
We really appreciated the front desk staff gentlemen who took the evening/night shift I think his name was “Lolie”. Always made our night pleasant, a very professional, kind and considerate person. These are the key details in which we look for when returning to a hotel. So thanks to him it overrided other staffs bad/unprofessional attitudes.
Our room was clean, and the bed was very comfortable, it did get a bit chilly at night, and the air conditioning system didn’t have a heater, none the less the hotel quickly provided additional blankets to accommodate. We really liked the water filtering system that was installed on our floor, very convenient and good tasting water. Our balcony had the view of the back parking lot and partial ocean grounds view. None the less we didn’t mind and there was little to no disturbances from the parking lot. Which was perfect.
The restaurants at the hotel (there is 2) were both good, we enjoyed the food, which was great quality, little on the pricy side but good. We didn’t appreciate the staff getting annoyed with our late dinners. Sometimes we were not served until 15 minuets in given we were seen. I had to wave down the waitress/supervisor who seemed angry to serve us. She would look at us and insist to ignore, leaving us waiting up to 15 minuets. As she came to our table she didn’t even bother saying hi, straight up asked us what we wanted with a really aggressive rude tone. We did not appreciate that. I’m assuming the waitress was a manger, given the fact that she ordered another waitress (elderly waitress)to come and serve us, after she read my shocked and disappointed facial expression from being so rude. We hope our review allows for this waitress/supervisor to be spoken to regarding this behaviour. (Short and had black hair, mid thirties) (If your not happy with your job, you shouldn’t be working there)
On the other hand we did have wonderful service from one of the other severs, a Hawaiian gentlemen who work more often at the restaurant that closed at 10 pm, and a young lady (fast and efficient waitress) Back end staff (bus boy/food runner gentlemen, were always giving great service too. Kate was wonderful and very professional, (the lady who hostesses at the restaurant that closes at 9 PM)
The grounds: The hotel has 2 pools, and two hot tubs, which we both really enjoyed, they were designed beautifully and really allowed to relax. Grounds were kept clean and prestine.
Overall, our stay at Outrigger Resort in Kauai was enjoyable, with a few notable highs and lows. The location, cleanliness, and great front-desk service (especially Lolie) made a strong impression. The amenities, pools, and food quality were also great.
However, the attitude of certain restaurant staff left a negative impact. A hospitality business should always ensure that every guest feels welcome, regardless of the time they choose to dine. Had we stayed at the hotel more often, we would have been very frustrated with the treatment we received from some of the restaurant staff. Luckily, our days were spent exploring Kauai, so our encounters with the staff were limited.
Would we recommend this resort? Yes, but with the understanding that renting a car is necessary and that restaurant service may be...
Read moreAs you all know, it has been nothing short of a big ole God-centric lovefest since I have been here. What with learning Hawaiian, celebrating all things Kauaʻi, and even starting my lessons in Hawaiian to speak to TuTu when I return home, plus my entire last day has been fabulous. I do understand that a fat ole white lady on her own (waihini, BTW, which means female or a bunch of other things; but certainly not haole, which apparently means soulless, which y’all know I am NOT!) can be offputting. Unfortunately, the scary meant the beautiful, talented Flores Sisters (who I cannot find here on FB to save my soul) did not sing my requested song (Somewhere Over The Rainbow, which Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole’s version has become my favorite). S’OK, sisters. I may have scared you by offering to buy your group juices (they don’t drink) and unfortunately you might have pegged me as a stalker. C'est la vie — life is too short for regrets.
That was a mere blip (because what is a missed special song on one’s last night on Kauaʻi) until I got outside and asked the gents scrolling through their phones (I think they are bellmen, but the resort may want to ask them why their phones are more important than guests — even guests of the Beach Villas wearing blue armbands) if the path back to the timeshare was well lit. Remember, I am on walking sticks after my fall and clearly need just the teensiest bit of extra help. Nope, not from those guys; their phones are wwaaaayyy more important. “Oh, I don’t know if it is lit or not” said the youngest. Uh huh. I may have been just a tad sarcastic with my reply. There was about a 12’ stretch that was unlit. I took it with baby steps; after the fall that knocked me senseless and hurt me bad, I am ever so careful in the dark. I traversed it without trouble until a beautiful East Indian lady (A GUEST, NOT AN EMPLOYEE, NOT BEING PAID TO HELP ME!!!) came along. I didn’t ask for her help; she simply helped. Unlike … well, you get the picture. She was a love. I wish I knew her name to say thanks.
Luckily, I don’t have to boycott Outrigger tomorrow by not using their (admittedly gorgeous, at least by nightlight) pool and hot tub. No one in my party of 6 ladies wants to get their hair in the ocean because we have long red-eyes home tomorrow night to destinations scattered across the US. So I don’t have to miss the pool. Too bad; I am sure the experience would have been something.
Apparently Shutters is located within Outrigger Kaua'i Beach Resort & Spa. I thought it was a step up from Wyndham Kaua'i Beach Villas, which are older and slated for demolition. Not so! The folks in the office here are kind, funny, solicitous, and actually DO care about their guests. So do yourselves a favor, folks, and take it from Jeff Hobensack and me (apparently the VIP Influencers for Fat People Across America): you do NOT want to stay at Outrigger. If Wyndham Kaua'i Beach Villas isn’t available via Vrbo (met the nicest family above us and that is how they are staying here), then check yourselves into a hotel and pay a little more for folks who actually care. I will be copying this into Google Reviews and YELP, but ya know, it is just lil ole me and...
