Well apparently we should have read more into the reviews before booking this room because this was an awful experience. To start, while checking in with Charles, we were interrupted while speaking when trying to explain the names on the rooms we had booked. One of us had a confirmation for her room, but was told it didn’t exist. He was in the process of checking us in on the computer when another customer walked in behind us and politely said (while holding her room key) that her door did not lock. We probably should have left at that point. He was extremely rude to her and yelled “PATIENCE I’ll get to you in a minute.” Behind him on the wall there were room keys hanging out in the open. Not locked up or hidden from customer view. These are turn keys with a keychain attached. So anyone, at any time could walk in behind the counter and snag any of the keys there. Charles then told us that our room keys were in our rooms. He did not direct us to where our rooms were located. We had to walk through a parking lot that probably hasn’t been fixed in more than a decade. The building was run down and very uninviting. When we entered the rooms, there was an overwhelming smell of bleach. One of the beds was pushed out of place. The blankets on top of the beds were filthy. Covered in stains of who knows what. When pulling those back, the sheets were covered in hair and what looked like dirt. Disgusting. There was rotting food on the floor of the tiny kitchenette area. The bathtub fixtures were rusting and it appeared to be detaching from the wall of the bathroom. One light switch turns on the lamp in the corner and the tv. Separate switches have to be turned on to use the refrigerator and microwave. The air conditioner and refrigerator out off a very foul smell..so mix that with the bleach smell and you get an instant headache. Neither of the deadbolts on the doors locked, so again, anybody at anytime could unlock our doors by either taking a key from the office, or picking the lock. As three young women, this is a terrifying thought. We knew we could not stay there. To top it off, as we are walking back to the office, a cop slowly drives through the parking lot patrolling. When we entered the office we rang the bell 3 times before having to find someone to help us. It was one of the housekeepers who was sitting in the cafeteria area out behind the entrance. He explained that Charles had stepped out and didn’t know when he would be back. My sister explained everything I just mentioned to this housekeeper and told him we needed a refund because there is no way we could stay there. He was unsure of what to do and tried to say that the rooms were just cleaned. He then called Charles and told him the situation and Charles told him we should wait for him to come back so he could deal with it. My sister then explained that were on our way to a wedding and were already going to be late because of this fiasco. The man didn’t know what to do which I understand. It is not his responsibility to deal with these issues, which makes me wonder why Charles would leave the establishment unattended. Why would he leave his housekeeper to handle anything when he was clearly not trained to do so? The man then said if we could come back later we could talk to Charles. We told him we could not after reiterating how unsafe and disgusting this place was. We left a phone number and a note describing (again) everything that was wrong. Charles never called. My sister had to call 2 days later to speak to him about a refund. He claimed he issued a full refund but we have yet to see that money. DO NOT BOOK THIS MOTEL. It is clearly a motel that caters to truck drivers looking for some company at night, while parked at the rest stop directly behind this place. Filthy, unsafe and a rude/unhelpful manager is a recipe for my worst motel experience ever. Any positive review of this place is a complete lie. DO NOT STAY HERE…unless you enjoy sleeping in filth and are not afraid of...
Read moreMy husband and I have stayed at the Lodge at Kennebunk on several occasions, whether when driving to or from New Jersey to visit back home from the midcoast area, or just for a little getaway to the area. The owner, Charles, has always been remarkably kind and accommodating, but our Labor Day weekend visit was a whole new level of hospitality. We arrived on Friday and immediately felt like crap--both of us. We laid in the dark, barely able to drag ourselves up to go get COVID tests. Before we had, my husband called the office to discuss our likely early departure the next morning. The gentleman at the desk said we would have to speak with Charles the following day (it was getting late in the evening at this point). Well, we didn't have COVID and by some miracle, felt a lot better the next day. No idea what it was--maybe a 24-hour virus. In any case, we were grabbing a late breakfast when I got a call from Charles. He said he wanted to give us the option to leave and receive a refund for our remaining two nights. We thanked him for being so gracious and I double-checked with my hubby that we definitely were up to staying. Charles said to take our time and finish eating breakfast, then just let him know within the hour. We let him know we would be staying. He was equally kind the next morning, when I put my corn muffin in the conveyor belt toaster (in the well-stocked breakfast area) and it got stuck, making smoke billow throughout the room. Oops! The topper on it all came on our last night there. We Ubered to Ogunquit for a night out and figured it would be no issue to get one going home. I think it was around 11 when we realized we were going to be stuck--no Ubers or cabs to be found. We were starting to consider hitch hiking when we decided to call the motel for advice on a car service. Charles called us back a few minutes later and ended up coming out of his way, from his home, to pick us up. I was so humbled and amazed by what a fantastic human being would go the extra mile(s) to help us! I cannot say enough how impressed we were with Charles' act of kindness, and we had the great pleasure of chatting with him and finding out that we'd only scratched the surface in terms of his selfless ways toward others. The Lodge itself is down-home and simple, yet well-kept, with a beautifully groomed property, outdoor pool, game room and renovated rooms--always a reliably comfortable, affordable and pet friendly option for quick and...
Read moreWe were very dissatisfied with the roon we were given. The chairs had been covered with chair covers and were too stained to be useable. The rack at the end of the bed was so dirty that I did not feel comfortable putting my suitcase on it. The inside of the refrigerator had mold in a number of places. It was a cool night and when we turned on the heat the noise from the fan was so loud that it was uncomfortable. Since there was no one at the office we made new reservations else where and left the key in tbe drop box.
On the other hand, the agent in the office was very nice and helpful when we checked in.
Followup: I was contacted by the manager and he had already refunded the nights stay to my credit card. I explained the reasons I had left and he said the noisy fan had been repaired and the stand at the end of the bed had been replaced. He explained that in this slower season the rooms don't always get a lot of use and the refrigerator had been turned off and the door inadvertently left closed resulting in some mold. I feel the situation was properly addressed and if traveling in the area again would not hesitate to make reservations at...
