Horrible first impression of this campground. My family and I arrived on base in the morning and checked in at the campground’s main office first thing and was then shown our reserved spot. While my family members were parking and prepping our RV to be used, I went over to a bench situated in front of our spot along the water. Due to traveling on the road all day, I haven’t slept in 24 hours, so I laid down on the bench to stretch out and relax. After a short period of time, the military police truck pulled up in front of our spot and two cops approached me on the bench. They started questioning me on what I was doing, where my RV was, why I wasn’t laying down in my RV (which I explained how we just got to the spot and thus the RV was still getting situated), and then they proceeded to request my military I.D. They claimed that you can not nap/sleep on the benches and that this rule is “base policy.” After I went back to our truck to retrieve my military I.D. and showed them, they then admitted to seeing my family and I arrive and check in at the campground with our RV. I wanted to ask why the previous interrogating was necessary then, but was quite intimidated to be completely honest. Although the campground is in a pretty location and the water view is relaxing, just wanted to warn any future campers to not lay down on...
Read moreWhat a great place to enjoy the ocean and have quick access to Key West. My wife and I have been here for almost 3 months and we have thoroughly enjoyed every day. We were supposed to leave a month and a half ago and we just keep telling ourselves, that we are not ready to leave the campground nor the Key West area. Alas, we have to leave this Sunday for a family event so we will do so with sadness in our hearts. A great combination of dry camping and full hook ups. There are three different bath houses with laundry facilities. One of the laundry facilities is currently shut down for repairs. In addition to the great location and facilities, the staff here is just incredible. Headed up by Shannon, the rest of the team, Dennis, Alvin, Andrea, and Angel do a phenomenal job of supporting all the campers. It is amazing to watch them handle the campers' request sto be moved from one part of the campground to another for a variety of reasons. Some people want to move from dry camping to full hook ups. Other people want to move from full hook ups not on the waterfront, to full hook ups on the waterfront. Whatever the request is, the team works hard to accommodate the campers. They are also quick to respond to any maintenance issues that arise. Can't say enough good...
Read moreThis is the best spot to stay in the FL Keys for military/retired if you can get a reservation for $26/night no hookups. About 70 sites have full hookups and the other 100 or so are dry camping. We had several cold, sweatshirt-long pants types of days, but mostly mid 80s and mid 70s humidity with lots of sun during Feb. A lot of people use solar, but more use generators especially on hot days, so it's pretty noisy until 2200. When making reservations, the dry camping portion is referred to as "overflow", so be aware of that if you're told the CG is full. We tried for over 6 months to get in and then made a reservation for 15 days about a month out once we figured out the "overflow" situation.
Sigsbee Island has a PX & commissary with all you'll need as well as a gas station. At the marina, you can rent paddle boards, kayaks or motor boats. There is tons to do in old Key West, but parking is $5/hr. You're better off riding your bike in. If you want to visit Dry Tortugas NP, which is 70 miles west of Key West, you have to seaplane or boat in. Reservations fill up months early, so be prepared. You can tour the fort where John Wilkes Booth's doctor was imprisoned as well as go snorkeling. Avoid the Stoned Crab Restaurant right outside the gate. The food...
