Review for Old Key West Disney Resort: Has the Magic Faded?

For the past 10 years, my family and I have proudly called Disney’s Old Key West our second home. It was more than just a hotel—it was a magical retreat where every detail, from the friendly guard at the gate to the enchanting aroma in the lobby, created an unforgettable welcome. The simple words “Welcome Home” would fill our hearts with joy. But sadly, those days seem like a distant memory.

While the gatekeeper still greets us warmly, the magic fades the moment you step into the lobby. Gone is the signature aroma that once made you feel like you were entering a magical realm. Gone are the cheerful cast members ready to greet you with a genuine smile and a heartfelt Welcome Home. Instead, there’s a small bell to ring, and after waiting for several minutes, someone finally appears—wearing a forced smile that feels more robotic than magical. Even my daughters, now ten years older, noticed the drastic decline. One of them turned to me and said, “What happened to our magical place? It feels like a Days Inn now.”

But the disappointment didn’t stop there. When we finally arrived at our room, we were hit by a strong odor of damp, old carpet. It was clear the room hadn’t been updated in over a decade. This was not the fresh, welcoming space we remembered. Exhausted after a long day of travel filled with delays, we went looking for something as simple as water. In the past, there would be complimentary bottles of water waiting for us. But not anymore. My daughters tried calling housekeeping and the front desk, but after several attempts and a 15-minute wait, someone finally answered. The response? A blunt “We don’t provide bottled water. There’s a vending machine.” Then they hung up without even telling us where to find it.

So, I went searching. After some time, I found a vending machine near the bus stop. But even here, frustration followed. I swiped my card only to find that the machine was empty—despite displaying items as if they were available. It was one issue after another. And in that moment, I couldn’t help but wonder: Has Mickey lost his magic?

The Old Key West we fell in love with used to embody everything Walt Disney stood for: a place where families could escape reality and experience unparalleled service, attention to detail, and joy. But now, it seems those ideals have been replaced by corporate indifference.

Has anyone from Disney’s leadership team walked through this resort lately? Do they truly understand what guests experience? The state of Old Key West today is a far cry from Walt’s vision of a magical world where families could feel at home. It feels like the focus has shifted entirely to profits—how many Disney+ subscriptions can be sold, how much revenue can be squeezed from parks and resorts—while the magic that made Disney special has been left behind.

Even small details, once the hallmark of Disney’s excellence, have been neglected. From the lack of proper maintenance in the rooms to the impersonal and dismissive attitude of some staff, it’s clear that the priority is no longer creating magical experiences. My family, who once looked forward to this yearly trip with excitement, now feels disheartened. My daughters even asked if we should start looking elsewhere for our family vacations.

It breaks my heart to write this because Old Key West used to mean so much to us. It was our sanctuary, our escape, our home away from home. But today, it’s unrecognizable. I hope someone in Disney’s leadership reads this and decides to step out of their office, skip their meetings, and experience these resorts as a guest. See what we see. Feel what we feel. Ask yourself: Is this the magic Walt Disney dreamed of?

For the sake of families like mine, I hope someone takes action to restore the magic that has been lost. Because right now, it feels like our second home is just another ordinary hotel. And Disney should never...

While other resorts have more flash and Disneycentric decor , OKW is the perfect resort for people who need to feel decompressed. Welcomed. And not obligated to run run run. Long gone are the bus issues they had. Where you could wait 45 minutes to get a bus going or coming there. It has been replaced by regular and reliable rotations that accommodate everyone. The refurbished interior of the hospitality house takes it from the old Bahama decor influence of dark wood and beige with palm leaves to a palette of a coastal colors that are inviting and relaxing. The rooms are the largest on property due to being the 1st DVC and the space even in a studio is welcomed by anyone that enjoys spending time in the room. The staff is OUTSTANDING. I cannot begin to adequately discuss how attentive and kind they were. They were very much invested in the guest experience and enjoyment of everyone they met and came in contact with. The pool is a perfect temperature. And parking was ample and without issue. It took all of 10 minutes to get to EPCOT by bus. During the day it took 15 to 20 minutes to get to Magic Kingdom. Much faster to get back to the resort. The drawback is that Disney still treats them as the forgotten resorts. They put very minimal shopping goodies and the store is very very small. In my opinion they do that because Springs is a short ferry away. But it's a mistake. They also don't seem to randomly send characters over as they do for other Deluxe resorts. And again I do think that's Disney's error. As far as their stellar care during Helene (we were there), I feel that it their calm and working with guests who couldn't get flights home due to cancelations was nothing short of spectacular. And for the first time in the 30 years I've been going, the resort pixie dusted us in a super kind way that elevated our 10th anniversary celebration. We stayed there when we got married. We were fortunate to stay there on the 10th anniversary. I was so shocked and I NEVER expect things like that. The above and beyond was truly about and beyond. This is the most underrated deluxe resort with some fantastic cast members and amenities. If I was to offer Disney one piece of advice. It would be that on the next room refurb, use furniture that is multi use. Like the Murphy beds that are tables in AoA. I think this resort could so easily have multi use pieces and storage. The rooms are large but space utilization could be maximized. Oh and Mousekeeping are FANTASTIC!!!! You will not be disappointed in the experience of this resort. And finally because it's got minimal stimulants of Disneycore objects, kids and adults can calm down and decompress and allow themselves to reset. That's so hard to find on property. Truly amazing with all the right...

My family and I have stayed at numerous resorts here on Disney property and I have to say Old Key West is one of my favorites. From the convenience of the boats to Disney Springs to the delicious food at Olivia's Cafe to the amazing cast members who go above and beyond for guests "coming home". We requested a specific area, when we arrived the room was not in the area where we wanted, they kindly got a room in the building we requested - allowed us to stay in the first room overnight and moved our belongings the next day. The boats to Disney Springs are one of the major reasons we chose to stay at Old Key West and upon arriving we found out they were down, and my husband was bummed - but understood the reasoning. While we were at the park the next day, Debbie from the front desk at Old Key West called my husband to let him know that the boats were back up and running because she knew how much it meant to him - now THAT'S going above and beyond! When you're traveling you tend to always forget that one thing! Well that happened to me! Have no fear, the cast members at Old Key West are here to save the day! The general store was closed and I asked if they sold a specific item, this amazing cast member went in the back and kindly "tossed" this item over to me - I didn't have to worry about heading to the store early the next morning! I couldn't have asked for a better outcome! Cast members are one of the most important aspects to the experience here at WDW, and it's cast members like that who just set the standard! Sitting here, enjoying the weather and the hidden Mickey I see over on Par 3, I'm just to happy to be here. ✨️✨️ **EDIT! 6/28/23 I have to also give a huge shout out to the people who make things happen behind the scenes - housekeeping!! These people work day in and day out cleaning up AFTER US - making our beds, cleaning up bathrooms, picking up dirty towels, filling the dishwashers, so much more! They bring pillows and blankets late in the night if needed, they respect personal property - making a difference with it looking the same as you left- but tidied up! They are super friendly and ensure each guest has a clean space to stay in. These people truly deserve more recognition and respect from families. Don't leave your room disgusting - be a little respectful and clean up after YOURSELF and YOUR FAMILY. We teach our kids to do this, so we should all lead by example. Thank you Old Key West housekeeping, you are a great...
