We ate at The Broken Axle on the recommendation of a friend. This is a COVID era review. We were greeted and seated immediately upon entering. The restaurant is spacious (due to social distance regulations). It's got a warehouse kind of feel with concrete floors and metal tables and chairs. The decor is dark and dim. There's loud, profanity-laced music that I would not want young children to hear. There's an L-shaped bar taking up one corner of the restaurant which seats about 30-40. Regular macro brews are on tap. Upon being seated we were brought bags of popcorn to munch on, which was cool, but it wasn't very fresh. The menu tried to distinguish itself with some home grown twists on bar food standbys. We sampled Tot-chos, nachos made with tater tots, cheese, tomatoes, and ground beef. The dish did not come to the table hot, so the ground beef tasted a little old. It actually had the appearance of having been pre-made.
The sandwiches come on toasted bread, buttered and grilled. I will forever wonder why venues that serve food this way don't also make the meat portion square, too, and fill out the bread. As it is you get about four bites of nothing but bun. This and the Philly cheese steak were passable, but nothing to brag about or recommend. The Broken Axle version of the BLT came with none of the promised avocado, and we had to have it brought to the table after the fact. I'd like to go try some of the other menu items and see if I can't get fresher entrees, but it's a twenty minute drive to do so, and I can get mediocrity...
Read moreRecently stayed at the Appalachian Outpost for a 5 day riding trip in Hatfield McCoys. The Cabins are absolutely fantastic. They are clean and comfortable with a fully stocked kitchen. They have all the amenities you could possibly need. Bar and grill, wash station, fuel, convenience store, and SXS rentals. They also just installed a pool which will open for next season. Nancy Baisden, the facility manager, was outstanding. She was extremely helpful in answering all our questions as well as giving us recommendations for numerous things. She was super responsive anytime I reached out to her when I needed something. The facility was about 1/4 mile from the Rockhouse trail connector and about 10 miles from Bearwallow. My only gripe is the highway noise at night and being there are over 20 cabins grouped together, there can be some noise from other people getting rowdy. I personally like a place a little more secluded and quiet, but overall this place was...
Read moreWe had an absolutely wonderful time at Appalachian Outpost! Nancy was very personable and hospitable upon booking and check-in. She even helped with restaurant recommendations and was sure we had everything we needed.
The cabins were a great size and layout. We stayed with a group of 16 adults and used 3 cabins. Each cabin came with its own grill and propane and fire pit with wood.
The location was not bad, but I've had better. The Outpost sits right off the highway, which is really not a problem in terms of noise, but the atmosphere feels a little less like you're nestled in the mountains.
There is a trailhead located right down the road from the Outpost, although it's about a 30 minute ride in until you really hit the trails (Rockhouse).
The other trailhead is Bear Wallow and that's about a 10 mile ride on a two lane highway opposite of Rock House.
We would absolutely...
