I am writing to give this company a well-earned 5 star review, which is not at all my original experience with them (keep reading!). This campground changed ownership in May 2024, and there was something in the system that caused an upset for a large group of us campers who had booked some sites with one another for August 2024 back in February 2024. Some of us had our reservations overwritten, and we were going to be made to be downgraded in accommodations as a result. Various members also were going to have to spend more to buy supplies or amenities we weren't originally prepared to need.
The original saving grace here in our predicament was the camp manager, Hally. While she is not part of the ownership team who had this blip occur, she worked with us as best as she was able to ensure that our group could stay together and still try to enjoy our time spent here. If I am being honest, I was intending on enjoying the time with the group, because of the group, and then not ever returning under this new ownership because of what had transpired.
However, when this was expressed to one of the owners, Kyle Barger, he went well above and beyond what any of us could have ever expected to ensure our previous accommodations were not only met, but went well above and beyond what they would have originally been.
Kyle spent close to ten conversations, throughout an entire day, with various members of our very large group and worked through several iterations of planning and accommodations to get us to where we needed to be. Even when we expressed that some things seemed excessive, he wouldn't take no for an answer and used his personal funds and ownership to set us right.
From a more detailed conversation with Kyle, it seems his campground has received some negative attention due to various amenities being left in disrepair from former ownership. These amenities were still advertised on their site, and customers booked accordingly. While Kyle obviously can't stop time to finish these projects, he has taken on the duty of being the new owner to not only establish former amenities, but add new ones to improve the quality and experience of this camp ground.
So, while there was a growing and learning curve to be had here, Kyle and his team are obviously not backing down from the challenge. It was very refreshing to see what seemed like another owner looking to turn a profit, actually turn it all around to prove that he is actually very interested in providing a top rated experience for his visitors. There are too few business owners like this in today's market. He was not bothered to connect with us personally and do everything he could to clean up what was caused by a reported error in the system. It seems like they have really taken on the customer-first approach and are looking to make their camper's experience a great one.
From what I hear, most of their renovations will be done by the end of summer 2024, but many of them are already complete and open for operation. Due to Kyle's intervention, we went from worried about what this trip would look like to being ecstatic from the trip to come this coming August. Because of Kyle's action as an owner, we also anticipate returning in the future to enjoy any of the amenities we might not see this time.
As long as Kyle is around and sticking to the exemplary ownership he showed our group, we couldn't recommend this campsite more. If you are like us, your family will love it, and if you have something you don't love, Kyle has made it very apparent he would love the feedback to continue improving on his...
Read moreThe primitive camping is excellent. I've done a lot of primitive camping over the last 30 years, and I'll definitely be back. You'll notice that any negative reviews are about low go-kart speeds, the well-worn miniature golf course, or the fun center. If you feel you need a state of the art game room, fast go-karts, or an exceptional miniature golf course, you may want to go to Chuck E. Cheese or a place devoted to go-karts. If you want great primitive camping at a place that the kids will love, this is the place for you. The staff was friendly and good to the kids. You can order ice, firewood, and passes for the splash pad and mini-golf when you book, so they're waiting when you arrive.
I went with a friend and two kids, ages 4 and 8. Study the campsite maps and choose what suits you. The primitive sites along the river are spacious, wooded, and well maintained. There are plenty of freshly cleaned port-a-johns. The shower house is at the camp office and fun center. It has individual bathrooms with a shower, sink, and toilet that are clean and private. Most primitive campgrounds have dorm-type shower facilities with shower stalls and curtains for "privacy", shared sinks, and benches for your clothes and toiletries that are hard to keep dry. Ugh. We were there on a Thursday and Friday, and showered in the afternoons with no wait time. We appreciated that the fun activities are by the shower house, so the kids were easily entertained while we took turns showering and supervising them.
The game room is old school, with inexpensive air hockey and pool, and vjntage pinball machines. The kids didn't care that the pool table surface was scuffed, and it was nice for us to not hover over them so they wouldn't scuff it lol. Same goes for the putt putt. You won't hear the go karts or the highway at the primitive camping area.
They maintain a family atmosphere, no loud partying or fireworks, and it all goes quiet at 10 pm, a huge plus for us. The RV camping, cabins, and some campsites closer to the fun center aren't wooded, which some people may prefer.
If you like campfires, camp cooking, pretty sunsets, and plenty of trees, near lots of Hocking Hills attractions like zip-lines, canoeing, caves, and hiking, this is for you. Just 20 minutes to two towns with grocery stores and fast food. A gas station and carry out are right next to the campgrounds, and a Dollar General is being constructed there, too. Dogs are welcome, and although we didn't bring any, the kids enjoyed seeing them.
All in all, a great camping experience, and especially fun for kids. I'm already plannning another visit this year with another family...
Read moreFun center camping:
Fun center camping is not very good. Each campsite is squished together so that the middle of each campsite is 3 picknic tables long away from each other. So each electricity post for a campsite is just 3 tables away with it hard to recognize where one space ends and the other begins. You will be facing the parking lot and the building right in the middle of everything. The fun center is on top of a large hill which my car barely got over and my car also had trouble with some of the back roads to the cabins (it's a old ford contour). I would recommend to space the campsites further away from each other, maybe getting rid of some. There is no scenary. Your view no matter where you turned was the highway, your next door neighbor, or the parking lot/go carts. If your looking for somewhat privacy to unwind, this is not your campsite. If you want to be in the middle of all the action this this is your place to camp. Also there is a street light right above the right side campsites in the fun center, campsites 1-6. Why???? That's the whole point of the fire.
Primitive camping:
Looked awesome. Secluded, woodsy and all around what you'd expect. If it rains though, some of the roads will be muddy. The beach is really a smallish river.
Campground as a whole:
The mini golf course was not kept up. The green turf was rolling up and made myself and other families/children discouraged. The customer service was inconsistent. We met some very pleasant and helpful workers and a few that worked in the office who were off putting and unwelcoming. The bath houses are fairly decent, although they are not separate. Therefor during the weekend there were 6 shower/bathrooms being used between the 20+ primitive campers along with the cabin and electrical sites. Having to use the bathroom and having to wait for people to shower was frustrating. Down the road there was a nice beach and you are only about 15 to 20 minutes away from...
