Looks good, doesn’t feel good.
Booked and paid for our room on Expedia and arrived at 10:30PM to check in with a check out the next morning. For whatever reason, Expedia transmitted that we had only two adults when we had booked a room with two adults & two children. The room that was reserved had only a queen so that room would not work for us. The staff at the front desk said that they had a larger room where they could put two roll away beds. The upgrade for the larger room was $100 and the roll away beds were $30/each. So...here I am in the lobby of this hotel ....dead tired....being told that to stay here, I would have to pay an additional $160 (again for less than a 12 hour stay...). The staff at the front desk were not flexible to find a solution that would work...say complementary room upgrade...then charge us for the roll away beds....nothing....I asked since we can't get to a resolution, can we just cancel the reservation and we will move on. I was told that since it was non-cancelable reservation and they didn't make a mistake, they would not allow us to cancel. While I would agree that this is technically correct, it isn't customer friendly especially when we are dead tired in the lobby with two children who are looking to just go to sleep. It felt like extortion. The front desk staff failed to (nor did I think they cared to) create a WOW moment. The front desk kept saying they didn't have the authority to do anything to help us except charge us the additional $160. My son and I looked at the rooms and they did smell musty and old. By the time I came back down to the lobby, my wife was on the phone with Expedia and we knew we couldn't stay there as we were feeling much unappreciated. Again, the front desk kept saying they already have our payment from Expedia so they didn't feel compelled to get creative and help us. I am guessing they missed the class on hospitality 101. Long story short...we were so disgusted, we decided to potentially eat the night we paid Expedia (and fight that fight when we are better rested) and booked at the Avalon Hotel which is down the street. We will contact Expedia and recommend they stop selling the inventory of...
Read moreWith a name like Beverly Hills Plaza Hotel & Spa you would expect a really posh hotel. But after staying there I’m afraid I found the hotel to not be as swanky as the name may sound. The first oddity you have to deal with is a strange room numbering scheme. Our room, for example, was #521 but we were actually on the 3rd floor—I think. It’s a little hard to tell but it’s definitely not on the 5th floor. And they don’t have an elevator that goes direct to any specific floor so you wind up going up and down multiple staircases to get to your room. That’s very awkward if you have your arms full of luggage. Of course, you can have a bellman carry your bags but then there’s a tip to be paid.
Once you get to your room you have some other annoyances such as a limitation on the number of devices you can have on the WiFi at one time: one. Between my wife and I we had four: two phones and two iPads.
The heater is very effective, perhaps a little too effective. When it’s on it’s on—it’s running in high speed so you feel the wave of heat until it turns off again.
The pool & the landscaping of the grounds are lovely. But at night as you’re walking through the grounds to your room there are places where the bright landscaping lights are shining right into your eyes.
There are no handholds in the shower or bath.
Our room was noisy. The people in the room next to ours were up until 2:30 a.m. coming and going, walking back and forth, talking loudly. The floor is not carpeted; it is hard which makes it even noisier. The hotel management offered to move us to another room but at 2:30 a.m. we really weren’t excited about moving.
We had what according to the hotel is calling an Executive Suite. But, IMO, the rooms are not large enough to be called suites.
Some of these complaints may see to be minor quibbles but if you’re going to hold yourself out as:
“… the most celebrated location in the heart of Beverly Hills. The moment you cross the threshold into our boutique hotel, you will be transported into a world of unsurpassed luxury, and unparalleled service.”
you really should work hard to get the...
