We were extremely let down by our dining experience this afternoon at the restaurant of Barns of Amish Acres. To begin we drove over forty miles from our residence in Michigan to eat there. We were the very first customers and ordered the "feast" meal which appeared on menu to be sufficient enough food (based on previous Amish style meals we've enjoyed) for two people The selection items other than the "feast" were not of our particular liking When our food finally arrived I'll admit we were UNDERWELMED to say least. What we were served was not the good AMISH quality wholesome cooking we've enjoyed previously and had been anticipating. Example the pieces of fried chicken were about same size as those that come in a Swanson TV dinner, the "dressing" lacked several ingredients normally found in dressing such as CELERY and some other spices, the bread chunks in mine were not fully adsorbed in cooking and honestly for me tasted poor; I complained to server who supposedly went back to "kitchen" to relay my concern and returned several minutes later saying she was sorry but couldn't abate our issues, About this time after server went back towards the kitchen THE ANTS came?????; crawling across middle of table yep three separate times I had to swipe at three large black ants crawling along my side of table towards my plate; again I told our server who again said she was sorry but offered (quote) "Well you know it is a barn after all" Only beer available was a "craft beer" the server claimed many had told her was similar to "Bud Light" well similarity ended at those points that the swill provided was a "beer", was cold and in a can; it stopped there- not at all the best beer I ever had I don't need that level lip service; brown recluse spiders also inhabit barns should I have to wait for one of those as well ? I cant understand "why" if our server was so sorry didn't she attempt to bring a manager or someone above her pay grade over to discuss our complaints. I can not understand "why" since this restaurant has had weeks to prepare went they able to provide a better meal? We have enjoyed countless "Amish style" meals here in Elkhart region; Lancaster Penn and for forty years we lived in Maryland we dined at several Amish style restaurants and at no point were we served food purported to be "Amish style" cooking and when tasted discovered it wasn't anything at all like we have been accustomed to. I even told the server my displeasure and again the "I'm sorry" but where was here supervisor to discuss my complaints. So in closing; we left Michigan and drove over forty miles to be served a meal that in our case (maybe other diners had better meals I don't know we were social distanced away and I could not see) was as good as the fried chicken I've eaten at the Iron Skillet truck stop restaurant on the Interstate- that's sad to admit; we came for heritage and hopes of a finely crafted Amish cooked meal and never came close.....we did however give a great tip to the server- the experience wasn't her fault . Note to management if you read this and I hope you do; vinegar sprayed along baseboards will wipe out ants "scent trails" that ants follow; possibly keeping them off your...
Read moreThe good news was that the Inn was generally clean and interesting visually- kind of simple but not. Check in had at least three people helping as a big group came for a meeting so it was a busy place. But, check out was not so well organized. One young woman was trying to help people with breakfast and check out guests. Madness! The hotel is full and they are understaffed. There was not enough food out people where going into the kitchen looking for food! Bad deal after what we paid for the room. We went to McDonalds. Very disappointing. However the cleaning staff helped get our stuff to the curb for pickup. The actual room was fairly nice and clean. The mattresses were in need of changing. One mattress cloth covering was torn completely off on the end and was shedding its insides (Room 115). The mattress I slept on was unstable, lumpy and seemed to be pushing me to edge of the bed. It shook, was lumpy and uncomfortable. I am a very big guy. Mattresses need more padding! Our church group has been making a yearly trip here but next year I think I will vote we try some place else. There must be good beds or we are not returning. The food before the play was better than Das Essen- we ate at both places- and the play was very impressive. My wife and I and also our group enjoyed both immensely. Good job making your facility more accommodating for people in power wheel chairs. It is still difficult to open some doors that swing toward the chair. But you had done a pretty good job with...
Read moreAvoid this hotel. The room that was assigned when we checked in during the evening had a smell. We opened the window and ran the fan. This did not help. The next morning they offered some deodorizing spray but that did not help. We decided to check out and were told that we would owe for an additional night because they have a 24 hr cancellation rule. We had originally booked for 3 nights and were willing to pay for one (mad that we didn’t complain right way). I told the front clerk that paying for the second night was unreasonable given the smell. The maintenance man checked the room as well and confirmed that the room was “off.” I was also told the owner would call or email me. Nothing yet- after more than a week. I have called the hotel several times and still no response. The entire 3 nights is still on my credit card. I stay in lots of hotels and this is my first “avoid.” I also made a mistake in letting them email the invoice when I checked out. They haven’t sent it to me and I have an issue proving I checked out early. Another first for me.
In addition to the bad service and room, the “breakfast” is basically nothing. Towels are flimsy and it all seems a bit old for what used to be a reliable hotel. Unacceptable and fully earns my 1...
