I had a wonderful stay at the Best Western in Ottumwa and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the area—whether for business, family, or just passing through southeast Iowa.
First off, the location is excellent. It’s conveniently situated near restaurants, shopping, and the main roads, making it super easy to get around. Whether you’re heading downtown or just need a quick bite, you’re minutes from everything you need.
The rooms are impressively spacious, much larger than you’d expect for this price point. There’s plenty of room to stretch out, whether you’re staying solo or with family. The beds were comfortable, there was good workspace for a laptop, and the Wi-Fi held up great throughout my stay. The room amenities were modern and well-stocked—microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee maker all in working order.
What truly sets this hotel apart, though, is the staff. Every single person I interacted with—from the front desk to housekeeping—was genuinely kind, professional, and eager to help. I want to especially commend the front desk team who went above and beyond during my stay. They helped with local recommendations, accommodated a late check-in without any hassle, and were just overall welcoming in a way that’s rare to find these days. You can tell the staff here care about their guests.
One small point of improvement would be the bathroom cleanliness—not bad, but not quite up to the level of the rest of the hotel. A little extra attention to detail during bathroom cleaning (especially in corners and under fixtures) would bring it up to a 10/10 standard. That said, it wasn’t a dealbreaker for me at all—just something worth noting for management.
Overall, the Best Western Ottumwa is a reliable and comfortable place to stay. Great rooms, unbeatable hospitality, and the kind of service that makes you want to come back. They really do make you feel...
Read moreTo say the least I have never left a review... But this was the most horrific experience of my life. The attendant at the front desk was nice upon arrival and check in. The adventure started when the key card machine was broken and she had to let me into my room. She then could barley get the door open after unlocking it. I walked into the room and the tile floors had not been mopped and had dirty foot prints. Then the carpets had not been swept. I then visited the bathroom where I realized there was a beer bottle cap inside of the toilet paper holder. So of course then I went to the bed to check for bed bugs as a routine for all hotels. Luckily I did not come across any but then found the sheets on one of the beds was backwards and had dirt all over it. So on to the next bed as it was only myself sleeping for the night. The 2nd bed had blood stains on the skirt. I then realize the microwave hadn’t been cleared I look inside to see a piece of old pizza lying on the glass turntable! On top of all of that there were pubic hairs all over the bathroom. Of course I went down to the desk to speak with the very nice attendant that I had spoke with when checking in, I showed her the pictures and asked her if the room had even been cleaned. She then provided feedback that was more than unfriendly as did not believe what information I had provided her. I was not able to get a clean room and no refund either as I booked through a traveling site. She did offer to come clean the room but it was 10pm and I need to get to sleep as I had to be up at 4:30am. The lock on the door was also broken so it was a good thing the door was hard to open. So one sleepless night in a disgusting hotel room and I will from now on listen to...
Read moreIf I could give this place a 0 I would. I would never recommend. The location is sketchy. Still close to things but very sketchy. The pool was ok. My child got out with the stairs and as soon as he turned left he slipped. The edge of the tile is facing outward and not flush with pool that my kid cut the side of his toe bad that it was fishing blood. The front desk girl had no idea where hydrogen peroxide was or if they had any and there first aid kit was not checked they like it was supposed to even though it showed it was. Says the manager. The hotel supposedly just got renovated a yr ago. I call it just mascara and lipstick over stuff wrong. It smells horribly bad in hallways and the rooms are damp and smell moldy. Our sheets were gross and had to ask the front desk again for new sheets and she gave them to my husband to put on ourselves didnt even offer to come do it. Then we locked ourselves out and instead of making us a key she literally said once we left she tried to go in our room to get our keys and that she heard our dog and decided not to. We said no that you didn't need to go in iur room just that when we got back to make us a key. The manager onky gave 15% off as she would have to call head office. I am not impressed as I still had to go out and get disinfectant for my kids toe. Plus my kid was also looking forward to waffles and the machine batter wasn't working that great and the 1 girl tried to fix it 2 times and then said she wasn't touching it again. Disappointed and not the service I expected. Not a place a family...
