This hotel is right in the heart of downtown San Juan Bautista. Easy walk to the mission, to food (some great restaurants in town) and to the shops. ||||However, approaching the "inn" tells you everything you need to know about staying there. The building looks like it needs a good sanding/scrapping, along with a new paint job, the windows and glass entry doors need to be cleaned. The landscape/ plantings need attention as well. If the hotel could only do a little bit, the first thing they should do is clean up the front doors and add some plantings. It also wouldn't hurt to relocate the cars, for sale and otherwise, that seem to be permanently parked on the property, as well as find some sort of partition to shield the overflowing dumpster that is located right outside the balcony "upgrade" rooms. ||||Our room was painted dark brown and dark purple. No adequate, functioning lightening, at all, in the room, only decorative lights. (The bathroom had good lighting.) We needed our camping headlamps (thank goodness we packed them) to see inside our suitcases in the middle of the day. This is no exaggeration. It was a very depressing room, which I imagine was someone's idea of fancy and romantic. There was a chandelier (didn't put off any real light) over the "wet bar" area-- no glasses, mind you, but it did have a sink and a refrigerator. The over-sized blue velvet, winded headboard on the the bed looked like something straight out of Alice in Wonderland. The wings were so prominent, it was almost impossible to access the night stand. The sheets were too small for the bed. They didn't drape over the sides of the bed, nor were they bigs enough to adequately cover the blanket and bedspread at our necks and faces.||||Though it looked clean enough at first glance, there were several areas that needed attention. A spot of goopy muck on the middle of the bathroom floor, dried on dripped toothpaste or shaving cream on the bathroom door, hair and dust in the corners of the tub. Every light switch needed to be cleaned with antiseptic wipes, as they were all quite dirty. ||||I think originally someone tried to build a nice hotel-- or what they thought of as a nice hotel. Unfortunately, it all looks very cheaply done. If you don't have the resources, it's better not to try and make things too fancy. Why put in a big, tile fireplace-- all for looks-- if you can't supply the right size sheets and proper lighting? ||||Had our room been $119 instead $219, I wouldn't have felt so bad about our stay-- though there is absolutely no excuse for the darkness of the room. The place is way over-priced. I get the feeling that the hotel houses the entire family of the owners--judging by the cars that are crammed into the back of the lot, and by being awakened at 4:40 am by someone, who clearly wasn't a hotel guest-- starting his very loud engine right outside our room. ||||A disappointing stay, to...

Read moreI have thought about staying here for years and finally took my wife here for our anniversary. We both really enjoyed our stay. This hotel has a very nice historic feel yet it has many nice modern updated features.
The things that we enjoyed the most were the gas fireplace, comfortable mattress, and the decor both in our room and throughout the hotel. Expedia Shows that the beds have Tempur-pedic mattresses. My wife and I have slept on this brand of mattress for years because she has joint problems, and we consider it the best. It turned out that the mattress was actually a Posturepedic mattress by Sealy. Although we still prefer Tempur-pedic mattress, this was still a superior mattress to all other hotels we've stayed at, and my wife slept well on it.
The bathtub was big enough for two people to enjoy the jacuzzi tub feature although we did not use this ourselves. The tub also has two shower heads on opposite sides of the shower.
We enjoyed the nice mission style decor of the hotel. There were many nice pieces of furniture and design touches such as large acorn finials in the hall safety rails and a cute chandelier above the minibar. I have uploaded some examples of these.
The included breakfast was typical of a standard continental breakfast at a decent hotel. Food items included hard boiled eggs, make your own waffles, and juice. They did have many different flavored waffle batter choices which was a small upgrade over standard waffle batter.
The hotel is in an ideal location to walk to the many shops and the Mission San...
