I have been to the Palmer House 3 times in the last 4 years. The last and final time would be over Valentine's weekend 2015, I brought a group of 11 ranging in age from 30 to late 50's, booked 6 rooms. When I booked the rooms I asked about a discount based on number of rooms, was told they can't do that but if we wanted to take the "Ghost Tour" they could give me on on that.
We checked on all at different times on Friday afternoon, while waiting for our whole party to show up we sat in the bar and had some cocktails. Cara our Bartender was the only highlight of our weekend, she was great. We left for a short time to head out to eat at the New Mexican restaurant across the street, Great Food!
A Little before 9pm we all went back to the Palmer House to get ready for our 9pm tour. Ordered a drink and as instructed we waited in the bar for our tour guide to show up. She showed at 9:20pm we then moved to another room to start the tour. We are close group of friends that like to have fun and are always laughing and having a good time usually on one anothers behalf, during her going over the rules of the we all got Yelled at by the tour guide that if we don't take this seriously she will not proceed with the tour. The tour is a joke, they planted people down there who say they are on the tour also to say they are feeling ghost touch them and they are seeing things, these people the next day and Sunday are working at the hotel. We each got charge $30 on our room bill for the tour, no discount as promised.
The following afternoon Kim one of our group had a game she had set up to win a prize she set up a bunch of hair binders in the hallway with a goal of tossing a cotton ball in the middle of the binder. As we were playing the game a hotel employee walks by and in a Hostile voice says "Really, you guys are really doing this" and was angry because he seriously thought we were just going to leave the cotton balls on the floor when we were done. He totally killed the mood of the game. At that time we decided we were no longer going to give this unwelcoming hotel any more money, so we skipped the restaurant and bar for dinner that evening and skipped it for breakfast in the morning.
Time to check out Char our tour guide was checking us out, and was extremely rude to all of us, she could not even blurt out a single thank you for the over $2000 my group left there for the weekend. ...
Read moreI wouldn't recommend this beautiful place to anyone in a wheelchair or with bad lungs,(for a stay in a room) unless equipped with a good strong person to carry them, only due to the fact that there is no elevator and all the rooms are up slightly steep stairs on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. However one could still easily get into the building via the ramp and enjoy the bar and/or restaurant on the main floor as well as a nice sitting area with cool stuff to check out. There's also a small section with jewelry, soaps, books, shirts, pj pants ect...that are available for purchase. The bar (Pub) was very open and comfortable. My friend and I sat in cozy plush type chairs (I moved to the VERY comfy couch across from friend when our food arrived) and we used the wooden coffee table between us to enjoy our meal, which was delicious. I had the Ruben on wheat with sweet potato fries...Yum! My friend had the Phat boy burger with onion rings. While I waited for our food, I found a very cool book on the case next to us and used it to pass the time. The room we stayed in had a wonderful view of the town from the 3rd floor on the corner right next to the Palmer House sign. The bed was ultra comfy and the jacuzzi was lovely. I also very much enjoyed the vintage decor and furniture! Keeping in mind the age of the building and the fact that it will make noise at you whenever someone flushes their toilet...I would definitely recommend taking the time to experience a stay at the Palmer House. It was rather enjoyable and I plan to return in the future...
