Our 3-night stay at Sosta House was, unfortunately, something of a mixed bag. On the plus side, the breakfasts were absolutely delicious! We also really enjoyed the wine dinner on our arrival night. On the not-so-good side, our room left much to be desired. We stayed in the Loft which, on Sosta House's website, is described as "a hidden gem" that is "secluded from the house with a private staircase and entrance." We'd come to the Willamette Valley for a bit of R&R and, as a result, some seclusion felt like just what the doctor had ordered. But, while the Loft may be secluded from the main house, what isn't mentioned anywhere on the website or indicated in the photos is that it's located directly above their winery's production facility. If you associate the word "secluded" with "peace and quiet," you're in for an unpleasant surprise! Our first night we were kept awake by what can only be described as a giant industrial fan that someone had left running down below. It was so loud that it actually felt as if our bed was vibrating. While some people might enjoy that kind of thing, our definition of "pleasure" is quite different. The fan finally went off at 5:39 am. I know because I looked. We mentioned the fan to Mia the next morning at breakfast and, thankfully, it was left off our final two nights. However, the Loft is still directly above a working production facility, with windows that look straight down into that production facility, and throughout the morning and afternoon of our stay, people were coming and going, playing music on speakers as they worked. As a result, we never really felt comfortable in the room. As soon as we'd get back from breakfast, we'd quickly get ready and head out again, not returning to the room until dark. We had really looked forward to just lingering in our room and spending time on the property during our stay, but as a result of the noise this just never felt desirable. If Sosta House had just disclosed on their website or in their pre-arrival communication with us that the Loft was on top of a working production facility, this would have all been somewhat expected and we'd feel less grounds to complain. We likely would have simply booked one of the other two rooms on the property. But, as it is, we felt quite deceived by a description that made it seem as though this room was an idyllic place to stay. It's so unfortunate because, aside from the cost, my wife and I were just really excited to stay here after reading all the wonderful reviews and perusing the website. If nothing else, I hope to make future guests aware of the reality so that they might have a better idea of what to expect when booking.
In response to Sosta House
Sosta House's reply feels like a masterclass in how not to respond to a negative review. Instead of simply saying, "We're sorry, we'd love if you gave us another chance," or something to that effect, we're "wasting daily opportunities to find beauty, curiosity & connection in this one precious life to instead move through the world holding onto the disappointing minutiae & promoting the most negative & critical perspective…" Wow!
They continue, "Based on your many lengthy complaints of other hardworking small businesses that have served you, it seems you prefer the public online forum after the fact instead of normal, human, face to face communication in the moment."
I've written over 100 reviews. Most, as can be verified by anyone, are five stars. Just because I didn't leave Sosta House five stars does not mean I'm not "normal."
Most galling, though, is this insistence that we're overreacting because our room was "a little noisy." A loud, industrial fan being left on until 5:39 am is not "a little" noise. Likewise, there was no mention anywhere that the Loft is located on top of the production facility. There's a difference between staying on a working farm and the room you're staying in being located literally on top of and with windows directly onto a loud production facility. But I guess that's what we get for booking the...
Read moreSosta House is THE hidden gem of the Portland metropolitan area. Just 30 minutes out of downtown, the property is a quiet, peaceful retreat from the city. The soft and warm tones of the interior, the beautiful, inviting furniture, and its seclusion make this a really special place. It was clear to me in my stay that this was a family home, rich with history that is unmatched in B&B experiences I have had in the past.
I can always tell how much someone has cared for a place in the details that elevate the experience. The hand crafted signage, the custom built furniture, even down to the property’s ‘valley guide’ shows the level of care, attention, and love that has been poured into this place. That care and attention was equally met by the hosts who ensured that my needs and comforts were met in abundance.
The main house, too, is truly a dream home: farmhouse charm with modern design features. I spent a quiet morning drinking coffee, walking around the garden, and saying hello to the chickens before eating a delicious, prepared breakfast. I also spent that morning imagining the possibilities of hosting an intimate wedding or party on the grounds. I could only imagine how that same level of attention and care from the hosts would be carried through a special celebration like that.
If you need a sign to book your stay then this is it! And if you’re not convinced, spend some time poking around the website– I’m sure it will...
Read moreThis is a long overdue review! In July I celebrated my 60th birthday at this distinctive venue along with an impeccable 6 course dinner masterfully executed by Chef Mia along with her brother Nico. The ingredients were thoughtfully sourced hyper-locally and presented picture-perfectly but most importantly, oh so delicious!!! Even my non-seafood eating daughter enjoyed every course! Expertly paired with wines made by her family and a few non alcohol sips as well. We had all 3 guest rooms and they were all uniquely appointed with everything needed to create a relaxing and intimate evening. I stayed in the garden room and it was magical! Nico and Mia built a fire with smores kit after it was dark and we enjoyed the rest of our evening looking out over the vineyards as they were lit by the moon, stars and firelight. It was a perfect way to celebrate 6 decades on this planet and I am so grateful to have such a treasure...
