I’d like to preface this post: I don’t like leaving negative reviews and I truly want everyone to succeed, but we’ve been bed & breakfast catfished and we’re $200 poorer. The reviews online are NOT an accurate depiction of this property. The website is also NOT an accurate reflection of The House of 1833. We booked this B&B based on the reviews from online- just as we book many of our trips. We feel so duped! We pulled up, stepped out of our vehicle and were immediately struck by how overgrown and unkept the outside of the property was. I’m sure the gardens were “magical” at some point, but they haven’t been tended to in quite some time. Dog feces lines the entire area leading up to the mud room- disgusting. A dog greeted us in the entryway, barking and showing it’s teeth- not inviting. The entire house is in dire need of a cleaning. Honestly, this is a hoarding situation. It’s dusty, dingy, torn, tattered and smelly. Evan was very kind and personable, but a history lesson after a 4 hour car ride WHILE carrying our bags- not ideal. I’m an art teacher and a true art history buff- the antiques and artifacts are awesome, but the way they’re being displayed in the home is truly a sad situation. Everything is so crowded, cluttered and dirty, dirty, dirty! The pillow cases were tattered, the carpets were dingy, the sofas were falling apart and our bathroom smelled like urine (the ivy room). I didn’t even put my bags down- we left immediately. My husband’s allergies started acting up the moment we walked in- there was no way he could spend the night there and there’s no way I was crawling under those bed sheets! We were still charged for one night, but at least we have a unique story to tell! Please do not book your stay with The House of 1833- you’ll unfortunately be...

Stayed in the oak room. The jetted tub and working fire place was lovely and relaxing. The bathroom for this room is adjacent to it and has another large garden tub and stand up shower.
Being a very old home the floors are creaky , the beds are on the springy side and could use to be replaced but they were fine for a two night stay.
The sheets and bedding are like the rest of the place eclectic and homey , after tossing through the pillows I found two with the texture and the fluffiness to my liking. The blankets are not the crisp white bleached sheets you typically see in hotels. I actually liked the fact that there were multiple layers of textured blankets on the bed and it felt comfortable, and more personal. There was a thermostat in the room which was nice, as I like it on the colder side at night.
Evan is sweet as pie and his breakfasts were good! It was nice to wake up to the smell of breakfast first thing in the mornings (that I wasn’t cooking)
If you do not like dogs this is not the place for you, the owner has one (who was friendly ) guest are also allowed to bring theirs. The house was actually very clean regardless of a dog living there and didn’t smell (that I noticed ).
Maximalist is definitely applied to the homes decor style.
There are antiques everywhere as well as large beautiful house plants. For the amount of decor it was actually remarkably dust free the owner said he had sone kind of automated dusting whole house unit. (I’ve never heard of such a thing but man, I want one!)
If you are a boring beige Karen this is not going to be the place for you!
Clearly if your allergic to dogs don’t stay at a dog friendly bnb. But you’d think that would be...
Read moreIf you’re considering staying at House of 1833, stop thinking about it and just book your stay! This is an amazing B&B. We didn’t stay at the prettiest time of year (late November), so the gardens weren’t at their best, but they looked like they would be beautiful in the spring and summer. The house itself looks amazing as you drive up, especially at night, and is filled to the brim with many amazing treasures.
As great as the house is, the proprietor, Evan, was the highlight of our stay. He’s very welcoming and easy to talk to. He made us excellent breakfasts every morning, too. And he had great stories to tell about the history of the house and many of the treasures within.
Additionally, our room was great! We stayed in the Ivy room - I believe it’s one of the smallest rooms on the property, but it was still plenty spacious. And the room featured a great little fireplace, as well (complete with a Duraflame log that made starting a fire very easy).
Lastly, the location is excellent. It’s about a five minute drive from Olde Mistick Village (a cute little area filled with tons of shops) and Mystic Aquarium, about eight minutes from Mystic Seaport, and about ten minutes from the shops and restaurants in downtown Mystic. If you’re staying in the fall, it’s also near the cutest...
