After staying at Viking Motel, we had mixed experiences. We stayed in one of the motel rooms, NOT the apartment. A few positives: the room was relatively clean, the beds were relatively comfortable, the location is near cute shops/restaurants, the daily rate is economical, and the refrigerator in the room is a nice touch. We stayed here in late July, and having a box fan in the window was absolutely adequate and kept the room at a comfortable temperature even in the heat. However, there are a few basic aspects that were less than pleasant. Firstly, the door lock/knob was extremely difficult to turn in order to lock. When addressed to the owner, we were informed that, “People seldom lock anything on the island, but it’s understandable is not normal for most other areas.” Ultimately, we were able to lock the door with enough elbow grease. We ran out of toilet paper, and there were no extra rolls pre-stocked in the room. We had to request/send reminders for toilet paper/fresh towels be delivered a couple times before they were actually delivered. They advertise having wifi available, although we found the wifi reception to be spotty and unreliable in the motel rooms. If you plan to work remotely while staying in the motel room, I would not rely on the wifi reception. A few ideas for consideration: Having cups for water and also coffee mugs available in the room (there was coffee, a maker, but no mugs), facial tissue, extra toilet paper stocked in the bathroom, and having the fan stored in the room, would all be helpful. We had to request the box fan, although it states it’s already in the room. The motel policy mentions that maid service is available upon request, although there was no “maid service” door knob card in the room, as it was indicated. Overall, I’d say you certainly get what you pay for at this motel. If you’re looking for an economical place to crash at night while visiting and being on a budget at Washington Island, this is the place to stay. We found the owner to be friendly over text, and in our...
Read moreI was a bit skeptical about booking here because the price was so low, however after looking at reviews, I thought that it would probably be great. When we arrived, there were dirty towels and sheets on the bed and there was no handsoap or towels in the bathroom. The hostess was attentive to our request for towels and brought them promptly with some shampoo and conditioner and apologized for the forgotten sheets and towels. However, the motel unit was in need of upgrades. The carpet was stained. The room smelled so strongly of mildew, I had trouble sleeping. The shower curtain had visible black mold on it. The chairs were stained so we opted to not sit on them. The beds were very uncomfortable. We also had some noisy neighbors in the late evening and then in the early morning. There also was no box fan in our room until requested the next night. It was bad enough that we contemplated sleeping in our vehicle. Perhaps, based on other reviews, we just got an old room that's not used often? The one plus for the place was that it was the cheapest place on the island other than camping. Which in hindsight, I would've chosen tent camping to staying at...
Read moreOn a recent trip to Washington Island, my husband and I stayed at the Viking Village. The first impression we had was the impressive level of cleanliness and the line-dried, fresh smelling linens were a plus. As are most of the lodging options on Washington Island, this is an older property, but well maintained. The rooms are on the small side, but you don't come to spend time in the room anyway. Room amenities are basic: a small fridge, microwave and coffee pot; there is free WI-FI, but no TV, no radio, and limited electrical outlets for plugging in chargers and whatnot. I couldn't help but think that rearranging the furniture would make the room more inviting and comfortable, but it's not mine to do, so there you go. Overall, you just have to realize that your options are limited on the island, so you adjust your priorities and...
