I have camped at WhiteCaps many times, at least twenty times I think and it has always been a good experience. The current owners have made wonderful improvements and the place is well maintained, always clean and I highly recommend it for singles, couples, families and kids. Its proximity to the lake, the nearby mountain trails and the Kingdom Bike Trails is convenient. The hikes are not overly challenging so perfect for families who just want to get outside and fir the athletically inclined the bike trails are great. The major draw for me is Lake Willoughby. The pristine spring fed lake is just a stunning place. There are three beaches, one sbout 5 miles north, one directly across from the campground, where you have easy access with WhitCaps rental canoes and kayaks. Then there is a small, quieter, more natural beach just down the path. It's frequented by locals and has an unofficial tradition of being clothing optional for anyone so inclined. There are easy walking trails along one shore and the whole place is pet friendly. The campground also has a store stocked with those basic items you might need in a pinch and they also have some nice simple Vermont themed gifts for souvenirs. They have coffee for sale in the morning and food too! Dont overlook their breakfast and lunch sandwiches. They...
Read moreOverlooking the beauty of Lake Willoughby is a cockroach of a "Campground." Camp sites here looks more like a taped off block of sleeping ground to a Lalapalooza music festival. We arrived to a site full of trash and a spot so small I could barely fit my car and a tent. The sorry excuse for firepits are rusted old vehicle wheels with no grilling top. The roadway to the top sites is so prone to erosion that vehicles can't reach them and the lean-tos looked frightening. The air was plagued with mesquitos and black flies so bad it drove my dog nuts. The worst was the direspectful French Canadian mountain bikers who screamed, partied and pissed just feet from our tent it till 2am, I could smell it. I went to complain to the hosts who barely keep the place together. The bathrooms are full of bugs and there's no phone reception. You're best plan would be to VoiP call through your phone from the spotty wifi at the general store which has slim pickings. The firewood for sale was bark scrap and overpriced. If you;re looking for nice camping experience look elswhere and if you can't find anything consider a different plan for vacation. Certianly the worst campground I've ever been to. Cheaply priced, inded and you get what you pay for. They get two stars because the surrounding nature...
Read moreRented a cabin here last week . The hosts were very accommodating and helpful locating e-bike trails for us. The store had everything you could possibly need and home cooked food was delicious ! Cabin was clean and even though next to bathrooms and porta potties there was no unpleasant smells!! Found the bathrooms to be clean . There is a Water station for washing dishes . Sights are very small and close together and tent sights are up a very steep hill but our cabin rental was a perfect place to rest your head . The lake across the street had the most amazing views. We kayaked and swam and the water was so clear . You could walk quite aways on a nice sandy bottom . We drove to Newport to e-bike and trail was pretty flat and easy with pretty views and a stop beside lake to take a dip . Wasn’t comfortable trying to ride on busy road by campground. No place to ride in campground but there were a few kids with regular bikes . Other than the sights being very close together I would still return for another visit !! Can’t say enough about our hosts … they were great ! Also took a day trip to Canada because we were so close ! Bring a passport !!! Final note … you can also set up tents on a few spots across from cabins . Also used...
