This large, mostly flat campground is located less than 1.5 hrs from both both Cleveland and Erie Pennsylvania and closer to other high tourist density venues on Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline. It’s a great location for a base camp to visit historical sights like the maritime museums in Erie or Ashtabula ‘s waterfront and lake freighter museum. Pymatuning is a rather quiet park on mid summer week days with mostly seniors in the full service RV sites. Nice newish shower house lightly used because most RV owners use their own facilities. The full service sites on the outside of the section are larger and partially wooded. Reserve early if you want one of those, we senior RVers snap those up as soon as they come available. No wi-fi and Verizon wireless is consistently 2 bars.overall. Pymatuning is a quiet weekday venue with much to do in the region, especially for history and War of 182 buffs. The Erie Maritime Museum is a masters level course in that conflict as much of the Lake Erie and regional land fighting was centered on supply chain disruption for British shipbuilders in Canada. Our guide at the museum was highly informative and taught this old salt the origin of both “the head” and “poop deck” terminology. ||This campground is on the Ohio side of the lake and is managed by Ohio State Parks. Read morePymatuning State Park Campground is one of our go-to spots when we want a quiet, nature-filled getaway. Overall, it’s a great campground with a nice mix of shaded and open sites, and the atmosphere is peaceful—perfect for families or anyone looking to unplug for a bit.
They’ve recently updated the power at the sites, which is a much-needed improvement and definitely appreciated. Most of the sites are well maintained, and we’ve found several that we really like. That said, if you have a longer rig, be careful—some of the sites are pretty slanted and can be a real challenge to level on. It’s doable, but you'll want to scope out the site carefully before backing in.
The bathrooms are hit or miss. The central ones are decent, but the facilities outside that main area are pretty outdated. They’re cleaned regularly (which we appreciate!), but they could use some modernizing to match the upgrades happening elsewhere in the park.
One of our favorite parts of staying here is being close to the spillway—it’s always a fun little side trip, especially for kids who want to toss bread to the fish and birds. It’s kind of a quirky tradition that never gets old.
All in all, Pymatuning is a solid campground with great natural beauty, some recent improvements, and just a few quirks to be aware of. Still very much...
Read moreBeautiful quiet location. However my GPS tried to get me there via a road that is now closed. Get on N. Lake Road from Rt. 285 in Espyville by the causeway. Nice individual private bathrooms with a sink, toilet, and shower, but they painted the floor with gloss grey paint and when you add soap and water the shower floor area is quite slippery. They should have added sand or grit to the paint as it's unsafe as there are no handrails or shelves to grab onto. And the push button shower knob only keeps the water on for like 5 seconds! I've used these type showers before and usually you get 20 to 30 seconds per push. The fire rings were installed way too high off the ground. Some sites previous campers had put rocks around the bottom ring to try and make them work as designed. The spillway large carp were fun to see but you can't fish on that side of the causeway and really need a boat for the best chance of catching a fish on the rest of the lake. Nice for...
