This is a lovely campground tucked in the mountains just north of Asheville. It served as a wonderful base for our outings to Asheville and the Pisgah National Forest. Staff was really nice. Sunsets at the common area near the office with its benches and Adirondak chairs are beautiful.
We stayed on Penny Lane (PL) site 31. Getting our gas Class A motorhome leveled was a challenge because the site was 1.2 degrees rear low and 1.8 degrees right low. It is obvious that a large amount of time and money was spent terracing the sites, so it is hard to understand why they weren't leveled well. Concrete pad, concrete patio, nice new Trex picnic table, fire ring 50/30/20 tall pedestal Low water flow, 2.2 GPM 4" step cover sewer Critter resistant metal garbage can at each site that they empty as needed. Angled parallel, with generous spacing between sites on Penny Lane. Very good privacy at this site, especially on the door side because nice distance to the next site, it is offset so mostly toward the front relative to us, and it is downhill. Site on the driver side is closer, but again because of the length and offset, the RV on that side is behind us. Mostly shaded. Some minor road (big rig truck) noise from I-26. Even though it isn't that close, it can be seen from the turn-around at the top of the campground and I guess the truck noise just comes up the mountain. PL sites are up the hill, don't really have views due to trees. P sites are near the office, premium with really nice views of the mountains and river. D sites are on office level, but don't have views for the most part.
The road up to the campground is steep in places, and the road is not always wide enough for two RVs to pass going in opposite directions. But, it is not at all scary steep or twisty, even with a 36' Class A motorhome, at least not in dry conditions. We unhooked before getting to the campground and my wife drove the toad up the campground road first, while I waited at the bottom, which turned out to be a good decision as she met a car going down as she was going up, so she was able to let me know to wait. At the top, there was another vehicle about to come down the road and she was able to ask them to wait until I got up to the campground.
Verizon 49.7 down, 14.1 up, 2 bars LTE AT&T 12.76 down, 8.23 up Did not test the campground wifi because it is an open network.
Laundry with two washers and two dryers. $2.00 per load, quarters only. Dryers were slow and required two cycles to dry a load of towels even with the dryer set to high. But, while we were doing the laundry, one of the staff stopped by to ask how the machines were working and when we told him about the dryers, he thanked us for letting him know and said they would address the issue.
Roads are dusty. Even going the posted speed limit, our toad was filthy after a week of daily trips in and out of the campground.
I found the signs leading up to the campground amusing. Especially the 10 MPH speed limit signs - like anyone in their RV could or would go faster.
Tips: Blue Mountain Pizza in Weaverville is wonderful. Stony Knob Cafe has exceptional food and service. Just a short drive to The River Arts District and to The Biltmore Estate...
Read moreThe two stars are for the awesome views! Here's the good, bad and the ugly truth. We booked back in Feb for our Aug trip. We have a big group that likes to travel and camp together. We booked two RV sites, five tent sites, three yurts and one cabin, each for four nights. That's roughly $4k. From the beginning, we told Marissa and Jason about our large group and they were great at getting us all relatively close together and at the very end of the campground since we did have a large group. We even went up a month or so in advance and met them in person and checked out the campground. Talk about beautiful views! So we all arrive and are thrilled to see each other. Our group is quite diverse, ranging from 3 yrs old to 60 with nurses, realtors, a DJ, EMT/Firefighters, contractor, Air Force Lt Col, other retired military and more. Oh, The real fun begins. One camper was on a tent sight that was next to my RV site so we ran an extension cord so she could have some lights. While we were enjoying our first group dinner, (literally all sitting and eating dinner) Jason, the security/maint man unplugs the cord and starts winding it up, walking right through our site and said nothing at all until we asked. Said she rented a non electric site. Okay, following the rules to the letter, so we didn't cause a fuss. She then pugged her lights to her spiffy new truck. Boy, he thought he caught us breaking the rules again. You should've seen him trying to determine how those lights were working. The next day, we got a little kiddie pool for the kids (four 3yr old toddlers). Well, Jason said that was breaking the rules. I told him I didn't see anything in the rules and he told me it was common courtesy to ask. At 8:30 the next morning, I was awoken by Jason emptying the pool. Told us they didn't have the water for it. Please note, we used 10 gallons of purchased H2O, and it had rained too. Talk about common courtesy. Campers next to us came in and had a tear drop camper. It was quite warm and sunny so they put up a tent for their pet to get some shade. Jason told them- 'you can't have a tent on an RV site. Make up your mind, do you want an RV site or a tent site, you can't have both'. Also, one of the yurts had termites in it. Bathrooms needed a little attention, like toilets clogging. The so called fishing pond and dock was a joke. The dock isn't even there and the pond looked and smelled like the sewer run-off. It was a shame. We were totally excited. We often camp at state parks so we're familiar with rules and regulations. We are, however, not used to spending good money for rude interaction. We did discuss our concerns with the manager. We asked if she could get her sheriff to tone it down a bit. We realize he has a job to do and rules to enforce. We also stressed we were on vacation and was there any possibility we could find a happy medium between the two. Within ten minutes, Jason was back at our site, confronting us for complaining, so no...
Read moreWe had hands down the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE experience I have ever had in my life from Campfire lodgings. We had been looking forward to this trip for months and all hopes of EVER going there came crumbling down literally right before we were about to hit the road. Wow, where do I even start. Literally 6 months ago my wife paid for the deposit, which was for the 1st night of camping. Their policy is a 3 night minimum. Due to neither of us having enough vacation time we told them we wouldn’t actually be coming the 1st night but were willing to just eat the costs and stay 2 nights. They said this was fine and my wife actually even followed up to confirm this via email. Well fast forward to about a month ago my wife’s card was compromised so she had to get new debit and credit cards. So on the morning of the day we were to come (Friday) they tried to charge us for the rest of our stay and the card was declined. No email, call, etc. came through until about 1pm on Friday. They didn’t even have the decency to leave a voicemail! My wife was on an important work call and just saw a number from Weaverville come through. She called as soon as she got off her work call, which was approximately 20-30 minutes later. The “gentleman” on the line informed her “he had a business to run” and gave our site away. His excuse was that we didn’t show up on Thursday, even though we had verbal and email communication that we weren’t coming on Thursday. He said he had no record of this, even though my wife told him she spoke and emailed with Ande and could forward these emails. Oh and not to mention we had PAID for Thursday 6 months ago! Also, if you tried to charge us Friday morning you didn’t try to email or call until Friday at 1pm? Ok, I may be able to look past this and understand it is busy season, people are running a business, etc. but the sheer way all of this was handled was horrid. The person my wife talked to was unbelievably rude and did nothing but accuse us of being in the wrong! I’m still trying to wrap my head around how they could try to charge us Friday morning, give our site away within hours and do nothing to make this right. Anyone who goes camping and on top of it has kids knows how much planning goes into this. The camper was packed with food, clothes, supplies, etc. We were getting the kids out of school and both trying to take off early on Friday. Instead our weekend was ruined because of course there were no other decent campgrounds with availability on such short notice. The only solace I can find with this is odds are if we would have went, we would have experienced these horrible humans in real life, which would have been an even worst...
