Important note about location|We got confused about this area when trying to book a place to stay. Since our Lonely Planet travel book had a section about Mui Ne, I searched Mui Ne on tripadvisor. Mui Ne is the fishing town on the peninsula at the east end of the beach area, but the town with the nice beaches, all of the restaurants, and all of the guest houses/hotels/resorts is Ham Tien. After we arrived and I realized this difference, I searched Ham Tien on tripadvisor and there were many more options. Hoa Bien is in the middle of those two towns, which was a really inconvenient location without a motorbike. We rented some bicycles across the street, but even with those it took a long time to get to an area with nice beaches and restaurants, especially since they were falling apart. Most places we wanted to go were over two miles away and the cab ride was relatively expensive at 70-100k vnd each way. There was just about nothing in this area of town, which made us feel isolated. ||I hate to leave a bad review, especially since this place is family run, and I'm sure they mean well, but they weren't very friendly and we really struggled to enjoy our stay here. The place is pretty old and run down. The space has potential since it is right on the beach, but it needs work. A few changes would go a long way. ||Our room was fine, not terrible, but a bit depressing. The air con worked well, but the bed was really uncomfortable. We are used to hard/firm beds in Southeast Asia, but we could feel the coils in this mattress. The bathroom has open window slats with no screen, so if you don't keep the bathroom door closed, you get mosquitos in the room at night.||The common area that overlooks the beach could be a really nice space if they made it comfortable to sit and hang out. The only chairs were little plastic chairs, and the hammocks were old and poor quality. Neither seat was a comfortable option for very long. Some lounge chairs here would have made a big difference. ||Don't expect to go swimming and hang out on this beach. Because of its proximity to the fishing part of the bay, it is filled with trash. There was a lot of trash on the beach and trash in the water. The water was kind of brown too. I though I would try to swim, but I got grossed out and couldn't do it. If you really want the budget price here and have a motorbike to get around, stay here but then go to the Coco Beach resort for the day. They only charge 130k vnd to use their pool, towels, and beach chairs. It's a really nice section of beach with clear blue water. ||Overall I wouldn't recommend staying here unless you really need to save a few dollars (we realized there were also cheap places in Ham Tien for only about $5 more/night) and don't mind being a bit stranded in an...
Read moreWe stayed in this guest house for two nights. We choose Hoa Bien because of the reviews on Tripadvisor and because it's next to the beach. The beach was the only positive point (but there was a lot of trash, not really to hang out, maybe good for windsurfers). We were given the room right in front of the area, next to the beach. First we were pleased, but when we moved into the room, not any longer. The room is very old, the same with the bathroom (Maybe it is an older part of the Guest House and there are newer rooms?!). In the evening, we even found cockroaches and ants in the lavabo. There were a lot of mosquitoes everywhere in the room and we only were given a mosquito net on request, which we had to fix ourselves (not easy if there are not enough mounting options near the bed). We are sorry for the Guesthouse, but it did not meet our...
Read moreWe were planning to stay in Mui Ne for only a few days but liked this place so much, we ended up staying for two weeks! Hoa Bien is owned by a nice/helpful Vietnamese family who take good care of the property. Rooms are clean and reasonably priced and there's a spacious communal kitchen if you feel like cooking. The guesthouse is well-located between busy Ham Tien and less-touristy Mui Ne town (you can rent a motor bike at Hoa Bien). Best of all, the back of the guesthouse faces the beach and has a common area with chairs/hammocks. In the evening, local fisher-women will sell you fresh grilled scallops and other seafood, prepared right on the beach. Great guesthouse...highly...
