For my first time camping in Dongara, this was a lovely campsite. It is a bit small, but neat and very well maintained. I love camping; other campers are usually lovely, friendly, helpful people and this was no exception. We snagged an en-suite campsite, which would have been ideal for a caravan but a bit difficult for a tent and gazebo. Despite that, we got set up and loved our stay. The location is excellent. It's on the Port Denison side within walking distance of the hotel, which serves good food, a bottle shop, a fish and chip shop that serves excellent and great value food, a playground and the port and beaches. Not far from the camp ground is a lovely walk on the beach and, in the opposite direction, is access to a 4WD beach that was firm enough to drive on comfortably. The kitchen was impeccably clean, with sufficient space in the fridge for our food and two gas stoves, although these didn't seem to change gas flow when dialled down. The kitchen might benefit from another toaster and kettle, but that's just me. However... This is a Big 4 park. Other Big 4's that I have stayed at have playgrounds, activity rooms, and other distractions for children. This had none of those, apart from pancakes on Sunday (which were delicious). Most of the other campers seemed to be older and in caravans, which made the need for children's facilities moot. Down the road, the other campsite had a playground and giant pillow, which was overrun by children, but with dirt roads, I imagine a lot of children go home filthy. Overall, the stay was lovely with very friendly and...
Read moreThis site has a lot of great reviews so I'm thinking ours was probably a different experience. First off we stayed in a caravan, not a big caravan, just a jayco pop top. The site was to the left as you enter ( perhaps to the right the spots are better). These have ensuites. Packed in like sardines was an understatement, you've got the van behind you about 4 feet away from yours and barely enough room for your car. If someone is packing up, good luck getting out, you can't you just have to wait as it's too narrow.
Secondly because you're opposite the chalets, you might have to put up with people drinking and partying til midnight on the balcony's like we did. It says 10pm curfew ( and I love a beer myself trust me) but these kids were up til 12pm every night at least with nobody in sight. Nobody wants to be the guy shutting down parties so i put my headphones in, luckily the kids slept through most of it.
Dongara? outstanding would be back in a heartbeat. Lots of great spots, pub is great, town has good food.
As this was our first "BIG4" experience, it's ironic that it's probably been our worst trip since we bought the van, having usually went to parks at Jurien Bay or Kalbarri, we just thought we'd try this one.
Long story short, minimal space and noisy, not my ideal holiday!
I'd imagine all the 5 stars are for the people booking the huts. Highly doubt we will be back to this site, we will try another, but love Dongara and would come...
Read moreSeems strange to me that there are so many 5 star reviews. We arrived at about 1:00pm to an unattended reception (out for lunch for 45 mins). I realise everyone’s gotta eat but you’re a Big 4, so have someone nearby or on the desk to greet guests, especially when we’re paying $70 a night. We did manage to get through on the mobile and find a park map in a box, however it was a very tricky space to park for a caravan because of the narrow road, nearby cabins and large trees. We were approached by another guest who also shared their frustration with trying to park at this site and saw some needed to park across two sites to fit. Beach views were nonexistent because our site was completely blocked by cabins and rusty bins. Management tried to find us an alternative site but none were suitable so we ended up forfeiting our stay and driving to Jurien Bay which was lovely. We were not offered a credit or refund by Big 4 so hopefully our payment can go towards some additional staffing and much needed improvements at the park. Feels like they’re riding the coat tails of the Big 4 brand. This is a rundown and awkward caravan park, worst we’ve seen on our lap. Rather stay at a gravel pit or free camp than pay...
