The Spirit of the Place I spent half a day in late October this year (2024) adventuring with Trina Reid, Under the Stump Owner/Guide in and around Gros Morne National Park on the Fjord, Bogs and Barrens tour. It was such an amazing day that I didn’t want it to end and a highlight of my 26 day trip in the Canadian Maritimes. Trina is an amazing member Mi’kmaq peoples. She and her husband Perry’s roots go back to the founding of Rocky Harbor, Newfoundland and Labrador. Trina was a nonstop font of knowledge infused with her indigenous wisdom. I learned about the flora, fauna, geology and her family and ancestors. Trina has an in depth understanding of the natural systems of Mother Gaia. She is par none, well-prepared, safety oriented (we were traveling in bear, moose and Cariboo territory) and carrying an in-depth knowledge of the various natural landscapes of Gros Morne National Park. More importantly to me, as a steward of Mother Gaia myself, is the indigenous wisdom she shared with me about the land, environment and its peoples. We spoke of so many aspects of our cultures and our relationship with Mother Gaia. Trina is so generous supporting her community with access to the wilderness. I had such a wonderful time with Trina and her family that I highly recommend Under the Stump as your opportunity to know the Spirit of the Place (Gros Morne) and its indigenous peoples. On my next visit I will go for an entire day and we will stay overnight in their wilderness cabin so that we can see...

We did not see any wildlife, but did see many varieties of flora, which Perry identified for me. He cheerfully answered our myriad of questions about certain aspects of Newfoundland life that had puzzled us, customs and way of life. He pointed out things of interest and told us a few stories as he drove us from forest up up to a treeless landscape with a view of the Gros Morne hills. Getting out to admire the 360 degree view we were struck with the absolute silence. Standing on a bed of soft moss and lichen, one feels as if one has to whisper, so as not to break the spell. It was a...
Read moreWe were a group of 6 from New Brunswick, and being avid "bikers" with our own side x sides, we really wanted the Newfoundland experience. Trina and Perry did not disappoint! We saw exceptionally beautiful scenery, learned sooo much about the local flora and fauna and the indigenous culture. Their new shop is full of information and beautiful hand-crafted gift ideas as well. They are very mindful of any guests with a handi-cap, which we also appreciated. They took pictures of us and with us, and we shared lots of laughs, we couldn't have been happier with our experience in their very comfortable side x sides! Thanks again Trina and Perry, from Pam, Jimmy, Danny, Lucy,...
