Planned my whole trip in Chiloé around the churches. Spent 5 days travelling around, visiting almost all of them. Planned my trip back to Ancud only for the purposes of getting my stamps at the museum for the ones that weren’t open (which was the majority), instead of going straight from Castro to Puerto Montt, which would have made my life a lot easier. Stayed an extra day to wait for the museum to open again after a public holiday. And all that only for them not to be open during the hours advertised. Excellent first stop to learn about the construction, history and restoration of these beautiful monuments. The handy map is a 1,000 clp bargain as it has a lot of information including the exact coordinates for the various sites. El Museo de las Iglesias de Ancud es una visita imprescindible para quienes desean conocer la historia y el valor patrimonial de las iglesias de Chiloé, declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. A través de sus exposiciones, el museo ofrece una mirada detallada sobre la arquitectura única de estas iglesias, su construcción en madera y el rol fundamental que han tenido en la identidad cultural de Chiloé.

Uno de los aspectos más interesantes del museo es la forma en que muestra las técnicas tradicionales de carpintería, transmitidas de generación en generación, y cómo los chilotes lograron crear estructuras impresionantes sin el uso de clavos, utilizando ensamblajes de madera.
