Even though I'm giving 1 star, I'd recommend to visit this place as it is very magical, but certain aspects take away from the experience.
We stayed at Ivan Dolac and had to came by boat, because owner wasn't able to answer questions via email/phone, if the place is accessible from Sveta Nedilja by foot. He responded but didn't answer any specific questions, like the access paths, or if it is recommended to climb in morning or possible during the day etc.
Also the booking availability isn't up to date on sites like Booking or AirBnB.
As we spent most of our cash for renting the boat, we didn't have enough for the entry and it wasn't possible to pay any other way. We had to ask guests for help, because owner wasn't available and he would have us come back to pay in cash. So not very open to compromise.
After reading other not so good reviews, it just seems like a cash grab and since all of us were climbers, we're kind of used to more welcoming & friendly climbing culture. And the owner left a really big distaste for coming back.
Now some practical information: The place should be accessible from Sveta Nedilja by two roads, one via "cliff shore" and the other should be from higher up.
There seems to be a lot of "tourist trap" rules. For example you should pay 1 euro for each flush of the toilet.
We mostly dealt with one woman, who I guess was staff there and she was super friendly and helped us a lot, but she was always like - "I have to ask Miro." So I guess captain runs a tight ship and only what he says goes.
So if you want to visit, go for it, from climbing perspective it's great and there is a big sector in the shade for the whole day. Good climbing guide is also available, that's a plus.
But if you go there, please, make the owner know that his approach is not OK. And bring a lot of cash, cause you never know for what you'll have to pay extra. It's definitely not 4.7. The average for staying should be maybe 2-3? For climbing, if you wouldn't have to interact with Miro, definitely 5/5
Want to come back, but maybe only under different...
Read moreCliffbase is an amazing and unique location were we spend a great week. My partner and i really enjoyed the climbing, snorkeling and scenery. And ofcourse the crazy stargazing in the night
However, The rules of the place where not explained well. When we first arrived we wanted to have some food and took some olive oil from the kitchen. The owner got very pissed at us for not knowing... and scolded us. There was no welcome from him and he did not say anything to us for the entire week except for again scolding us for not following the rules (he never explained). He even called us 'crazy people' behind our backs.
The climbing routes are beautiful and enjoyable most of the time, but not always safe and have big distances between the bolts. The bolts themselves are not made of the right material to withstand the salt from the sea and are not glued with the right material to the wall. Not safe
The snorkeling and swimming is amazing and you can see loads of sea life but the bay is full of sea urchins.
Accommodations are not the best for the prize you pay. Everything looks like it needs some maintenance and is a bit rugged. Moldy matrasses, old sheets with holes in them etc ..
Also worth noting is that its hard to get to the location. Its a steep hike to get there or a walk over uneven terrain.
All and all is cliffbase and amazing location were we made some good friends and had a lovely time but the price is to high for what you get and the owner really took away part of the nice...
Read moreI had a magical cave wine tasting experience at Cliffbase, a large remote wine cellar built in the cliffs of South Hvar, Croatia.
The cave wine cellar was built over a span of 5 years, and is located inside an old limestone chasm next to the Adriatic sea created with dynamite. In order to get to the cave, we hired a speedboat through our hotel to the island and then climbed up the front entrance to reach the remote location.
The owner, Mirko, is a amazing. He is a climber, a kind human, and also wine connoisseur who brings workers and volunteers from all over the world to maintain the vineyard, make olive oil, and teach mountaineering/climbing. If you go to Croatia you must go to this mesmerizing place! One of the...
