The Magnificent Spreewald, Lübbenau
It has been coming for years, a day trip with my Brother & His wife!
Spreewald was the destination, partially also one of the last Photo’s of my dad on his last holiday was taken there, so truly a trip full of meaning!
Although we didn’t take the 2 or 3 hour boat ride, (just too long, but the Spreewald is famous for that) we did take a stroll through the old town, visited the Schloss Lübbenau, passed through Nicolai Kirche, (Church) as well enjoyed some traditional Plinsen & Pflaumen Kuchen (HUGE Pancakes & Plum Cake) at one of the many cafe’s (the building history dates back to 1713) and of course enjoying a fairly light lunch at the well known and extremely well located Erlebnis Restaurant, Snack in the middle of Spreewald Harbour!
Specialities at the Spreewald are the world famous Pickles, flavoured in a number of iterations, but the most well known & famous are the Saure Gurken (salted sour pickles) it’s Leinöl (linseed oil) best enjoyed with Sahne Quark (soft cream cheese) and boiled potatoes, truly satisfying! Many stands line the what I would call marketplace, selling pretty much all the same thing, just showing it’s popularity.
Overall just a great day with the family that one does not meet often enough!
46 years in Asia, there comes a time when one does trace one’s roots back to its origin, and a fun and emotional thing to do!
Enjoy this little pictorial!

Just an hour away from Berlin lies one of Germany’s most magical and peaceful escapes — Spreewald. Known as the "Little Venice of Brandenburg", this enchanting region is full of natural canals, charming wooden houses, forests, and quiet villages. 🌿🚣♂️
Instead of going all the way to Venice, you can explore a whole network of rivers and creeks right here — by kayak, canoe, or traditional wooden boat. The calm water, singing birds, and untouched nature make it feel like time has stopped. 🕊️🌊
🕰️ A bit of history: Spreewald is not just about nature — it’s rich in culture too. It’s home to the Sorben/Wends, a Slavic minority with deep traditions, unique language, and folklore. The area was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1991 to protect its landscape, biodiversity, and traditional way of life.
Whether you're walking along forest paths, enjoying homemade pickles, or floating through quiet canals, Spreewald gives you a feeling of pure peace. 🌲✨
📌 Tip: Bring your camera, rent a boat, and just let the water take you. It's more than a trip — it's therapy. 🧭 Location: Lübbenau, Lübben or Burg – all great...
Read moreOne of the must do things in Spreewald is to take a boat tour through its beautiful canals. You don't need to book in advance, basically whenever a boat is full, it starts sailing. There are different types of tours, which depend on the season of the year, time of the day. The most typical is a 2-3 hour tour including half an hour break for refreshments during the middle of the tour and costs less than 20 euros per person. They also have longer tours that span more than half a day and evening ones.
All the boats in the canal are completely man powered, in order to keep the area free from pollution. You will get to know how people live around this area, see beautiful homes, guesthouses and restaurants. The gentleman sailing our boat is from around the area, hence was very knowledgeable. He knew every single house and was explaining when each one was built and the history behind them. He was cracking many jokes which can be deemed inappropriate by a lot of people but I enjoyed them nevertheless.
The tour was very enjoyable, I want to come back one day but in winter to enjoy the snowy landscape and try the...
