Filerimos — Local services in Municipality of Rhodes

If you’re staying in one of the resorts between Rhodes Town and the airport, you really shouldn’t miss this place (you can also get there from the town, but the trip is a bit longer).

We decided to visit the mountain on a day when the sea was rough, red flags were flying on the beaches, and boats weren’t allowed to leave the harbor. It turned out to be the perfect choice, and we didn’t regret it for a second. In fact, it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

Highlights of the Visit

The monastery – a beautiful old complex

The views, especially at sunrise and sunset.

The castle ruins – to get here, you leave the monastery courtyard, cross the road toward the Cross on Filerimos, and walk about 200–300 meters.

The peacocks – without a doubt, the stars of the show! Dozens of them wander freely around the grounds, showing off their amazing colourful feathers.

The Cross on Filerimos – a striking monument, especially for Christian visitors, but also a fantastic spot for photos.

The Via Dolorosa – a beautiful tree-lined path with 14 marble and bronze sculptures illustrating scenes from the life of Christ.

Good to Know

There’s free parking.

Right by the monastery, there’s a small kiosk/bar where you can grab a drink or a quick snack.

The peacocks are very friendly and used to people. If you can, bring them some water or a little bird food (though there are so many, you won’t be able to feed them all).

Try to avoid visiting on very hot days, especially at midday, as many spots like the Cross and the castle ruins...

Joke!.. Don’t get me wrong the view from the cross is great and the peacocks are everywhere, which is lovely. But €6 euros to use the toilet! Never anywhere have I had to pay that amount! Being shouted at to pay and have the police called! Whether disabled or pregnant (as my partner is) refusing entrance is an absolute disgrace! Yes the €6 euro is the ticket for the monastery, but had no interest to see that, just wanted to use the toilet. Absolutely appalled by the refusal and way I was spoken to. 10 out of 10 would not...

Pe culmea înverzită a dealului Filerimos, la câțiva kilometri de orașul Rodos, se înalță tăcută și impunătoare Mănăstirea Filerimos, loc de rugăciune și refugiu sufletesc, învăluit într-o liniște solemnă. Zidurile ei masive din piatră, brăzdate de trecerea veacurilor, par să spună povești despre călugării care au trăit aici, despre cruciați și pelerini ce s-au oprit pentru o clipă de reculegere. Construită în stil gotic, mănăstirea îmbină sobrietatea arhitecturii medievale cu delicatețea detaliilor bizantine. Fațada sobră ascunde o curte interioară pietruită, unde măslinii bătrâni își pleacă ramurile deasupra vechilor fântâni, iar mirosul cald al pinilor și al lavandei îmbracă locul într-o aură de pace. Înăuntru, icoanele vechi, candelele pâlpâind și fresca Maicii Domnului de la Filerimos, atât de venerată, veghează asupra celor ce vin să se roage sau să admire frumusețea locului. Drumul care duce la mănăstire șerpuiește printre chiparoși semeți, iar de pe terasa din apropiere, privirea se pierde spre albastrul nesfârșit al Mării Egee, într-o îmbrățișare de lumină și culoare. În tăcerea muntelui, glasul vântului și cântecul păsărilor alcătuiesc un imn nesfârșit al naturii. Mănăstirea Filerimos nu este doar o zidire din piatră, ci un loc în care timpul pare să fi încremenit, iar sufletul călătorului găsește...
