The Nautical Museum in Sami is a breathtaking tribute to maritime craftsmanship, history, and passion. This hidden treasure is the culmination of a lifetime of dedication by the incredibly talented Mr. Sotiris Marketos, a native son of Sami, whose love for the sea and its vessels is evident in every corner of this extraordinary museum.
From the moment you enter, you are struck by the stunning display of handcrafted model ships, each one a masterpiece that showcases Mr. Sotiris Marketos' unparalleled skill and deep connection to his maritime roots. What makes this museum truly exceptional is the personal touch that Mr. Sotiris Marketos has infused into every exhibit. He has poured his soul into these creations, and it shows. His intricate knowledge of maritime history and engineering, combined with his intimate connection to the local seafaring traditions, makes this collection not just a display of ships, but a living, breathing history of Kefalonia’s nautical past.
The museum itself is beautifully arranged, allowing you to explore at your own pace while absorbing the rich stories behind each vessel. The ambiance is warm and inviting, much like the man behind the museum. Meeting Mr. Sotiris Marketos, who is present to share his passion and knowledge with visitors, is an absolute delight. Read moreIn short, this place is a treasure. The model ships are not only expertly made, beautiful, but also extremely detailed. Photos do not do them justice, when you see them up close, you understand their true beauty and craftsmanship. It's clear that the owner and artist is a creative and technical genius. It's a wonderful experience for anyone that has the technical "knack", the curiosity to figure the function and form of things, and especially for those that love ships and sailing. However, the museum's true invaluable gem is the owner, Sotiris. Sotiris is a man that has spent years at sea, is a mechanic, a woodworker, a creative craftsperson that has the knowledge, culture and education to match his skills. He knows about geometry, physics, history, poetry, philosophy, he is a true homo universalis. He is soft spoken, friendly, accommodating, humble, and overall very pleasant person to tour the museum and chat with. I couldn't recommend this museum more. I believe that the museum should be highlighted more, and is a must to everyone's Kefalonia trips and vacations. Truly, truly truly a marvelous experience. If I could give this a higher...

My husband, a native of Kefalonia, and I happened upon this new Nautical Museum and we had to stop. First of all it is PRISTINE, outside and in. This museum is the passion of Sotiris Marketos who was ticket taker as well as tour guide. He explained that although he had a career as a marine engineer, he sold all he had in order to buy the property on which the museum is built. NOT ONLY did he also have the building built to his specifications, he ALSO constructed each of the elegant and extremely detailed ships within the museum as well.
What was most fascinating to me, however, is that (although I have studied Homer's work, The Odyssey, in Greek and English, I did not know that there are artifacts that lend credence to the fact that Odysseus was real and not just the creation of that ancient poet. The boat of which I am standing beside is part of that great mystery.
PLEASE do not leave Greece without a visit here. Kefalonia is a beautiful island as well and now it is even more so with this...
