Barunei Hill is situated close to the capital city in the district of Khordha. Barunei Hill is one of the most popular hill stations as well as picnic spots of Odisha. This site also falls under one of the most visited tourist places in the state. The major thing which attracts many towards this site is Maa Barunei Temple on the Barunei Hill. Maa Barunei Temple is located at a height of about 150 feet on the Barunei Hill.

The deities worshipped in the temple are Maa Barunei and Maa Karunei. It is as per the name of the goddess Barunei that this hill has been named. People also recognize Maa Barunei as Maa Arunei. The two deities in this temple are made up of “Kalamuguni Pathara” (Black Granite Stones). Inside the temple, where these two deities are placed- they are placed in such a way that on the left side Maa Barunei is there and Maa Karunei on the right side. Both Maa Barunei and Maa Karuneiidols are of the same height that is about 18 inches.

The Barunei Hill is situated 150 meter above the Sea level. The height of this is approximately 305 meter. The length of the Barunei Hill is nearly about 7 kilometer and 800- 850 meter in breadth. Nearly 85- 90 steps are there to climb to reach the temple premises of Maa Barunei and Maa Karunei.

There is also a pool on the Barunei Hill, found near the temple which is assumed as man- made. It is the fountain water which is collected in the pool. As the pool is present covered under dense trees and collects fountain water, the water remains cool even during the hot summer days.
