むかしむかし、この神社は薬師如来様が祀られていました。 その後、水戸藩主第第2代水戸光圀公が天妃神をここに祀ってこの地域の海の守護神としたことで天妃山と呼ばれるようになりました。幕末になり水戸藩主第9代徳川斉昭公が日本武尊の弟橘媛を海陸の守護神として祀りました。そして弟橘媛と改めて天妃神は合祀となりました。この神社は山を登る感じでお参りします。 小さい山なので気楽にお参りしましょう。山頂からは海も見えます。
