天城荘 外湯エリア日帰り温泉 — Local services in Kawadu

We visited Amagiso in August 2025. Like others have stated, the hotel portion is closed for renovation, but you can still visit the onsen 10:00-16:30 every day except Wed 水, for 1000円. It seems you might be able to get a free rental towel and swimsuit set if you have a valid local bus pass. I would recommend bringing your own swimsuit if you have one, as well as flipflops or sandals.

It is great value for money, but it is not a typical onsen experience. It is entirely outdoors, right next to Odaru waterfall and along the river. It is mixed gender, and it is obligatory to wear a swimsuit (rentals available). Because everyone’s in a swimsuit, pictures are allowed. While there is a (warm) shower outside you can rinse off with, there is no soap or shampoo (probably against the rules as it would pollute the river). When we visited in summer, there were many children running around, so it felt more like a waterpark than a relaxing onsen, but it’s an amazing place anyway!

There are separate changerooms for men and women. I can’t speak for the men’s changeroom but the women’s had shelves with baskets for bags, as well as small coin lockers for valuables (100円, not returned), a trash can, and a spinner to dry swimsuits.

There are around 7 different outdoor pools, including a large warm swimming pool (also where the toilet is), several hot baths in view of the waterfall, a “cave” bath, and a “tunnel” bath. You can also, at your own risk, decide to swim under the waterfall itself. The mossy rocks are slippery so take care, but the water is quite clean and not very cold, I would guess about 16°C at the time we went. I only saw small fish, but farther along the river there were some freshwater crabs and an adorable shrew.

Parking is in about 200-300 meters away where you should wait a little bit but not in the onsen . There are old women working who are really kind and helpful. こちらの温泉は混浴で水着を着て入ります。バスタオルとフェイスタオルと水着のセットで500円。「フェイスタオルは持ち帰っても良いですよ」と受付の人に言われました。 水着はどれもスカートが付いているタイプなので恥ずかしくありませんよ。 痩せている女性は黒色で柄の無い水着でした。 私はLかLLで迷ったので、受付の気さくでとても感じの良い女性のお見立てでLをお借りしました。 「着てみてキツかったら交換しますから来て下さいね」と優しい言葉に嬉しくなりました。紺色に茶色の花柄が付いてました。 水着は新しく、気持ち良く着ることが出来ました。 レンタルと持参する率は半々くらいです。 ３割くらいはヨーロッパ系の外国人なのですが、皆さん水着は持参されていました。 無料の脱水機が男性の更衣室にはあったそうですが、女性の更衣室にはあったかどうか気が付きませんでした。 またリュックが大きかったのですが、無理して更衣室のコインロッカー(100円)に入れると壊れるかもしれないから、その場合は受付で預かりますよと親切に言ってくれました。 露天風呂の場所は「大滝入口」というバス停で降りて、そのまま30秒ほど歩くと、左側に「大滝入口」という小さな門があり、そこをくぐり長い坂を下りて行きます。(谷底まで下りて行くイメージ)。 途中で大きな地図付きの看板が出てきますが、受付がどこにあるのか分からず、不安な気持ちでさらに下って行くとようやく受付があります。 入浴料1000円を払い、レンタルする人は別料金でタオルや水着をここでもらい入れます。 (お金を払わない人はここまで。大滝に近づくことはできません。) さらに...
