Makinoto Pass Rest House — Local services in Kokonoe

This is the entrance for the easiest climb up to Mt Kyuju and Mt Nakadake, Kyushu mainland’s highest peak. The rest house has a big parking area but it will be occupied very early in the morning. I kept my car in the narrow road opposite to the rest house along with many other people. The rest house toilet is clean, there is Kyuju shelter along the hiking path (around 6-7 h hiking in total depending on your pace) but the toilet was very dirty at least when I went. The rest house has a small but good souvenir shop and they offer coffee, yuzu tea and milk as beverage along with softy. It is good to have after the long hike. You can not rent but you can buy mountain gears such as sticks, hats, socks, jackets etc at the rest house. It is on the Yamanami high way (route 11) so very easy access from both...

牧の戸峠レストハウスは登山後によく利用させてもらってます。 主におにぎりやアイスクリームですが、とても美味しくて、疲れた身体に染み渡ります。 特に（ばくだん？）おにぎりは中に色々な具が入っていてオススメです。

駐車場は週末は6時半頃には満車に近くなり、花や紅葉時期はもっと早くに5時に満車近くになっていたこともあります。 駐車の際はなるべくキレイに停め、かつ、軽自動車などの小型車の隣が良いでしょう。 ドアバン喰らう可能性を考えて。。

少し早めに来て、夜明け前の星空から朝焼けまでをこの駐車場で拝んでから登山を開始するのも最高です。

駐車場にある公衆トイレは、2022年10月現在、トイレットペーパーは備え付けられています。ですが、無くなるタイミングと重なるなどあり得ることから念の為、紙は持参したほうが良いでしょう。
